Wondrous Item
Legendary Ritual of the Faceless
Assume Identity
As an action, the wearer can use the mask to take on the appearance of any humanoid creature they have seen before. This change lasts for 8 hours or until the wearer dismisses it as an action. The transformation is flawless, altering the wearer’s voice, appearance, and even clothing. The effect does not grant the wearer any of the target’s abilities, knowledge, or memories. Creatures with truesight or divination spells such as true seeing can see through the illusion. This ability can be used once per short or long rest.
Perfect Mimicry
While transformed using Assume Identity, the wearer has advantage on Charisma (Deception) and Charisma (Performance) checks made to imitate the target's mannerisms, speech patterns, and behavior. If a creature attempts to discern the disguise, it must succeed on a DC 20 Insight check against the wearer’s Deception roll.
Faceless Presence
When not assuming another’s identity, the wearer may instead choose to appear as a completely blank, faceless figure. In this form, their presence is so unremarkable that creatures find it difficult to remember or notice them. The wearer gains advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and cannot be recognized or remembered unless they take aggressive action or call attention to themselves. Creatures that see the wearer must make a DC 18 Intelligence saving throw or forget key details of the wearer’s appearance within 1 minute of seeing them.
Enhanced Properties (Post-Attunement)
Voice of Many
Once attuned, the wearer can alter not only their appearance but also their voice, speech patterns, and accent. When using Assume Identity, they may perfectly replicate the voice of the person they have chosen to mimic. This allows them to perfectly forge vocal commands for magical security systems or imitate the target’s speech patterns for deception.
Vanishing Whispers
If the wearer is targeted by a divination spell (like scrying or clairvoyance) or an effect that would reveal their identity (like zone of truth), the mask automatically attempts to obscure their identity. The wearer rolls a DC 20 Charisma saving throw; on a success, they are not detected by the spell, and any attempts to divine their identity reveal only a featureless silhouette surrounded by whispers.
Memory Extraction
While disguised as a specific target, the wearer can delve into the fragmented thoughts and memories of that target. This requires 10 minutes of concentration. The wearer must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or be overwhelmed by conflicting memories, suffering one level of Identity Fragmentation. On a success, they gain access to one surface-level memory of the individual they are imitating, such as a recent conversation, an important goal, or a memory associated with strong emotion.
Special Power - Mask of Lies
Once per week, the wearer can call upon the full power of the Mask of No One. For 24 hours, the wearer becomes immune to any spell, effect, or item that would reveal their identity, such as true seeing, zone of truth, or other divination magic. While under this effect, they are also immune to effects that compel them to speak the truth. At the end of this effect, the wearer must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or immediately gain one level of Identity Fragmentation.
Curses
Loss of Self
Each time the wearer uses the mask’s Assume Identity ability, they must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, they experience creeping detachment from their true identity, known as Identity Fragmentation. Each failed save increases the wearer’s level of Identity Fragmentation as follows:
- 1st Level: The wearer’s personality shifts subtly, and they begin to adopt the quirks, habits, and mannerisms of personas they have worn.
- 2nd Level: The wearer struggles to recall their personal memories and has disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws.
- 3rd Level: The wearer exhibits unpredictable behavior, sometimes acting as if they are one of the personas they previously adopted.
- 4th Level: The wearer’s identity is fully eroded. They forget their original name, goals, and motivations. Their alignment may shift as a result of past personas taking dominance. They become vulnerable to psychic damage and are susceptible to possession or mental control. Only a greater restoration or wish spell can restore the wearer’s true identity.
Whispers of the Forgotten
The mask is haunted by the voices of identities it has erased. At dawn each day, the wearer must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the whispering voices grow louder, causing disadvantage on Charisma saving throws to resist spells like charm person or effects that alter the mind. The whispers grow more aggressive the longer the mask is worn, with some voices even pleading for recognition.
The Mask of No One is a smooth, blank, featureless mask as white as polished bone. No eyes, no mouth, no distinguishing marks — only an empty void where a face should be. Its cold, unnerving touch chills the hand, and its surface seems to subtly shift under close observation. When worn, the mask molds perfectly to the wearer’s face, erasing all traces of their features, leaving behind a faceless figure that defies recognition or memory.
This mask embodies deception, anonymity, and the loss of self, drawing its power from the fear of being forgotten. It grants the wearer unparalleled mastery over disguise, stealth, and subterfuge, but the price for this power is steep. Each time the mask is worn, it slowly erodes the wearer’s identity, blurring the line between who they were and the personas they adopt.
