The Cursed Amulet of Avarice
Wondrous Item
Legendary The Pact of Avarice
The Cursed Amulet of Avarice grants the following abilities to its wielder:
Blessing of Riches:
At the end of each long rest, the amulet produces 1d6 x 10 gp in coins or small gems that magically appear in the wielder's possession. These riches vanish if not spent, used, or hoarded within 24 hours, leaving behind only dust.
Aura of Avarice:
The amulet radiates an aura of greed in a 15-foot radius. Any creature that enters the aura or starts its turn within it must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or become consumed by envy and greed. While under this effect:
- The creature is hostile toward anyone they believe possesses more wealth than them.
- They have disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws and Insight checks.
- This effect lasts for 1 minute or until the creature takes damage.
Insatiable Desire:
While wearing the amulet, you have advantage on Persuasion, Deception, and Intimidation checks made to acquire treasure, negotiate deals, or bargain for material gain.
Hoardsight:
As an action, you can sense the presence of valuable objects (coins, gems, or magical items worth at least 100 gp) within 300 feet. This ability can be used three times per long rest.
Enhanced Properties (Post Attunement)
Upon attunement to the Cursed Amulet of Avarice, the following properties are unlocked:
Heart of Greed:
Your Charisma score increases by 4, to a maximum of 24. In addition, you gain proficiency in Deception, and if you are already proficient, you double your proficiency bonus for Deception checks.
Master of Wealth:
You can no longer be tricked, scammed, or deceived in any matter related to wealth, finances, or business. You automatically succeed on any Wisdom (Insight) check to detect lies or deceptions related to financial transactions or bargains.
Eyes of the Hoarder:
While attuned to the amulet, your eyes glow a radiant gold, allowing you to see through illusions cast by spells of 6th level or lower. You can see hidden doors, secret compartments, or hidden treasure as if under the effects of true seeing.
Unyielding Possession:
If you are killed while attuned to the Cursed Amulet of Avarice, your spirit lingers as a spectral echo, bound to your hoarded wealth. Your soul attaches itself to one of your most valuable possessions (as determined by the DM) and remains there until you are resurrected or your vessel is destroyed. This vessel becomes a cursed object that draws thieves and adventurers toward it. If a new owner claims it, you may attempt to possess them, forcing them to succeed on a DC 20 Charisma saving throw or become your vessel.
Special Ability - Vault of Avarice
Once per long rest, you can invoke the Vault of Avarice, creating an illusory hoard of treasure in a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on you. The illusion lasts for 1 minute and affects all creatures that can see it.
- Illusion of Wealth: Each creature that sees the hoard must make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or become incapacitated, overwhelmed by greed as they attempt to seize the illusory wealth.
- Mind of Greed: Creatures affected by the illusion are considered blinded and deafened to their surroundings, as they become utterly consumed by the desire for wealth.
- Break the Illusion: If a creature takes damage or is forcibly moved, the effect ends for that creature.
Curses
Unending Greed: Each dawn, you must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save:
- You are compelled to prioritize the acquisition of wealth above all other goals.
- You suffer disadvantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks that involve acts of charity, mercy, or generosity.
- If you do not acquire at least 500 gp worth of treasure within 24 hours, you take 3d10 psychic damage as the amulet whispers tantalizing promises of wealth and power into your mind, eroding your willpower.
Cursed Wealth:
Wealth acquired while attuned to the Cursed Amulet of Avarice is often marked with misfortune. For every 1,000 gp or equivalent wealth obtained, there is a 25% chance that the treasure is cursed. This curse can manifest as a vengeful spirit, a rival adventurer seeking to steal it, or a band of thieves magically drawn to the wealth’s location.
Envy’s Price:
As greed takes root in the wearer’s heart, their appearance begins to shift. Their eyes take on a golden hue, their skin becomes unnaturally smooth and cold like polished metal, and their presence unsettles creatures with strong moral convictions. As a result, the wearer suffers disadvantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks when dealing with good-aligned creatures.
The Cursed Amulet of Avarice is a golden chain adorned with a large, flawless ruby that glimmers with an unnatural, hypnotic light. Its surface is engraved with intricate symbols of coins, crowns, and goblin figures, all intertwined in a chaotic spiral. While the amulet radiates opulence and promises great wealth, those who wear it feel a growing hunger for riches that can never be satisfied. The closer one gets to ultimate wealth, the stronger the curse grows, warping both the mind and body of the wearer until they become a vessel of pure greed.
