Wondrous Item
Legendary Trial of Envy
The Envious Gaze Lens grants the following abilities to its wielder:
Insight into Desires:
While wearing the lenses, you can see the innermost desires of any creature within 60 feet. As an action, you can focus on one creature you can see and discern the following:
- Their deepest unfulfilled desire.
- A secret they are currently hiding related to their ambitions or greed.
The target must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw to resist this effect. On a success, you learn nothing, and the target becomes aware of your probing. This ability can be used three times per long rest.
Aura of Envy:
While attuned to the lenses, your presence subtly influences those around you, heightening feelings of jealousy and competition. Creatures within 30 feet of you must succeed on a DC 18 Charisma saving throw at the start of each hour or become envious of an ally or object of desire. Envious creatures:
- Have disadvantage on attack rolls and skill checks targeting the subject of their envy.
- Are compelled to confront or undermine their object of envy (this compulsion ends if the creature takes damage).
Manipulative Whisper:
As a bonus action, you can subtly influence a creature’s emotions by exploiting its envy or greed. Choose one creature you can see within 60 feet. The creature must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by you for 1 minute. While charmed, the creature views you as a confidant and is more willing to follow your suggestions. This ability can be used twice per long rest.
Jealous Strike:
When you deal damage to a creature, you can channel their envy to empower your strike. As a reaction, force the creature to make a DC 18 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes an additional 4d10 psychic damage as their own jealousy manifests painfully. This ability can be used three times per long rest.
Enhanced Properties (Post Attunement)
Once attuned, the Envious Gaze Lens grants additional power to its wielder:
Vision of Ambition:
You gain truesight up to 30 feet, but only for objects or creatures that are considered "desired" by others. This allows you to see magical auras of envy, detect illusions hiding objects of desire, and pierce disguises worn by those who seek to deceive others for gain.
Master of Greed:
You gain proficiency in Persuasion, Insight, and Deception. If you are already proficient, you double your proficiency bonus when making Persuasion, Insight, or Deception checks against creatures you know to be envious or greedy.
Covetous Deflection:
When a creature makes an attack roll against you, you can use your reaction to force them to make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the attacker becomes distracted by their envy, and their attack automatically misses. This ability can be used three times per long rest.
Heart of Envy:
You become immune to the charmed condition and gain advantage on saving throws against enchantment spells or effects. Additionally, whenever a creature attempts to charm or manipulate you, they suffer 2d10 psychic damage as they experience an overwhelming sense of envy for your position or possessions.
Hollow Desires:
Creatures charmed by you while you are wearing the Envious Gaze Lens remain charmed for an additional 10 minutes after the charm effect would normally end.
Special Ability - Eyes of Envy
Once per long rest, the wielder may invoke the full power of the Envious Gaze Lens to cast Eyes of Envy, which reveals the hidden ambitions of all creatures within 60 feet.
For 1 minute, you gain the following benefits:
- You can see the desires and jealousies of all creatures within 60 feet without requiring an action.
- You have advantage on Persuasion, Deception, and Intimidation checks against those creatures.
- You can force up to three creatures within range to make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, each creature takes 6d10 psychic damage as their jealousy and greed consume them. On a success, they take half damage.
Drawback: After using this ability, you suffer disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws until your next long rest as the lenses temporarily warp your perspective, making you distrustful and paranoid.
Curses
All-Consuming Jealousy:
The lenses amplify the wearer’s own feelings of envy and greed over time. Each dawn, you must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save:
- You develop an irrational envy toward an ally or object, causing disadvantage on ability checks involving the subject of your jealousy.
- The longer you remain attuned, the more obsessive and paranoid you become, believing that others covet your possessions or status.
Fragile Trust:
While wearing the lenses, your manipulative nature becomes apparent to those with strong moral convictions. Any creature with an Insight score of 15 or higher that interacts with you for more than a minute must succeed on a DC 18 Insight check or recognize your attempts to manipulate them. This imposes disadvantage on all Charisma checks made toward that creature for the next 24 hours.
Eclipse of Reason:
Each time you fail a Wisdom saving throw while attuned to the lenses, you become cursed with a Delusion of Envy. For 24 hours, you believe that one of your allies is plotting to steal your possessions or usurp your position. You become hostile toward them and may refuse to assist them during battle or cooperative efforts unless you succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw.
The Envious Gaze Lens consists of delicate bifocal lenses set in a gold and emerald frame. The lenses shimmer faintly, shifting in hue between deep green and black as though reflecting the jealousy and greed within the hearts of those nearby. Crafted by Envarus, the god of Greed, Envy, Inspiration, and Goblins, these lenses grant the wearer insight into the hidden desires and jealousies of others, turning their weaknesses into tools for manipulation. When worn, the lenses subtly warp the wearer’s perception, making them see the world through a filter of envy and ambition. While the power they bestow is undeniable, it comes at the cost of one's ability to trust or be trusted.
