The Star That Screams

Weapon

Legendary Rite of the Shattered Sky

Cosmic Fracture
When the Star That Screams hits a creature, it deals an additional 2d10 psychic damage as fragments of cosmic knowledge flood the victim’s mind.   The target must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or suffer disorienting visions, giving it disadvantage on its next attack roll.
Hallucination Pulse
As an action, the wielder can strike the ground with the morningstar, releasing a wave of fractured starlight in a 20-foot radius.   Creatures in the area must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw.   On a failed save they:
  • take 4d8 psychic damage

  • are frightened until the end of their next turn
On a successful save they take half damage and suffer no fear.   This ability can be used twice per long rest.
Whispering Star
While attuned to the weapon, the wielder constantly hears faint whispers from the screaming star fragment.   The wielder gains:
  • Advantage on Insight checks

  • Advantage on saving throws against illusion spells
However, the whispers never fully stop.

Enhanced Properties (Post-Attunement)

Starburst Strike
Once attuned, the wielder can channel the exploding star within the weapon.   When the wielder scores a critical hit, the target must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or become stunned until the end of its next turn as it experiences a catastrophic vision of cosmic annihilation.
Prophetic Echo
Once per long rest, the wielder may meditate with the weapon for 1 minute to receive a fleeting glimpse of the future.   This functions similarly to the augury spell.   However, the answer always manifests as disturbing cosmic imagery rather than clear words.

Special Power - Supernova Revelation

Once per week, the wielder may invoke the full power of the dying star within the weapon.   As an action, the wielder slams the Star That Screams into the ground, creating a 30-foot radius explosion of psychic starlight.   Creatures in the area must make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw.   On a failed save they:
  • take 10d10 psychic damage

  • become confused (as the confusion spell) for 1 minute
On a successful save they take half damage and are not confused.   After using this power, the wielder must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or immediately gain two levels of Star Madness.

Curses

Screaming Madness
Each time the wielder uses Hallucination Pulse, they must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw.   On a failed save, the screaming of the star intensifies, inflicting one level of Star Madness.   Star Madness Effects
  • 1st Level — The wielder hears constant whispers and suffers disadvantage on Perception checks relying on hearing.
  • 2nd Level — The wielder experiences hallucinations and suffers disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws.
  • 3rd Level — The wielder struggles to distinguish friend from foe during battle, suffering disadvantage on attack rolls once per encounter.
  • 4th Level — The wielder is overwhelmed by cosmic revelation and becomes affected by indefinite madness until cured by greater restoration or wish.

Hunger of the Star
The weapon hungers for moments of violent revelation.   If the wielder goes three days without striking a creature, the whispers grow unbearable. The wielder must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or suffer 4d8 psychic damage and disadvantage on attack rolls until the weapon tastes blood again.

The Star That Screams is a terrible weapon born from a fragment of a dying star that Khione captured during a moment of cosmic madness. Its head resembles a jagged crystalline starburst, its spikes uneven and warped as if frozen in the moment of an explosion. The metal of its haft is cold and dark, etched with spiraling runes that seem to shift when stared at too long.

Those who hold the weapon hear a faint sound like distant screaming carried across the void of space. At times the sound is barely perceptible, but when the weapon strikes flesh the screaming grows louder, echoing like a cosmic choir of shattered minds.

The weapon embodies Khione’s most dangerous revelation: that knowledge of the universe’s true nature is overwhelming and terrifying. Those struck by the Star That Screams glimpse fragments of impossible truths—visions that can shatter sanity as easily as bone.
