Wondrous Item
Legendary Trial of Endless Terror
Aura of Dread:
The cloak emits an aura of palpable terror in a 30-foot radius. Hostile creatures that start their turn within the aura must make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. While frightened in this way, creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks, and they cannot move closer to the wearer. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. If a creature successfully saves, they are immune to the aura for 24 hours.
Manifest Nightmares:
As an action, you can summon horrifying illusions from the cloak. All creatures of your choice within 30 feet must make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, creatures are paralyzed with fear for 1 minute as they experience vivid hallucinations of their deepest fears. While paralyzed, they are incapacitated and unable to take actions or reactions. They can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of their turns, ending the effect on a success. This ability can be used once per long rest.
Shadow Step:
While in dim light or darkness, you can use a bonus action to teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is also in dim light or darkness. After teleporting, you become invisible until the start of your next turn or until you attack or cast a spell. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and the uses reset after a long rest.
Spectral Vigilance:
While attuned to the cloak, you are constantly aware of nearby threats. The cloak's spectral eyes remain open at all times, granting you advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks and making you immune to being surprised.
Eyes of the Abyss:
As an action, you may activate the eyes on the cloak, causing them to open fully and stare into the souls of nearby creatures. Choose up to 5 creatures within 60 feet. These creatures must make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or be subjected to an effect similar to the Phantasmal Killer spell. Each creature is tormented by an illusion of its worst fear and takes 6d10 psychic damage at the start of each of its turns while frightened. The effect lasts for 1 minute or until the creature succeeds on its saving throw at the end of its turn. This ability recharges on a roll of 5-6 on a d6 at the end of a long rest.
Enhanced Properties (Post-Attunement)
Nightmarish Form:
The wearer becomes one with the shadows. While attuned to Noaptea Veșnică, they can cast Greater Invisibility at will, but the spell lasts only for 1 minute. Additionally, when you enter dim light or darkness, you can choose to merge with the shadows, becoming untargetable (as if under the effects of the Etherealness spell) for up to 10 minutes. This effect can be used once per long rest.
Fright’s Command:
You gain the ability to control frightened creatures. While a creature is under the frightened condition due to your abilities, you may use your bonus action to issue a simple command (as per the Command spell) without requiring a spell slot. Frightened creatures have disadvantage on the saving throw against this command.
Living Shadow:
When you drop to 0 hit points while attuned to Noaptea Veșnică, you do not fall unconscious. Instead, your body becomes a wraith-like shadow for 1 minute. During this time, you are immune to all damage except for radiant damage, you can move through creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain, and you can make only one attack on your turn. After 1 minute, you return to your normal form with 1 hit point, but you gain 2 levels of exhaustion.
Special Ability - Embrace of Eternal Fear
Once per week, you can activate Noaptea Veșnică’s full power. For 1 minute, the cloak transforms the surrounding area into a realm of pure terror.
- The area within a 120-foot radius becomes shrouded in supernatural darkness. This darkness cannot be dispelled, and even creatures with truesight see only flickering shadows.
- All creatures of your choice within this area must succeed on a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened and paralyzed for 1 minute. Creatures that fail this save are subjected to visions of their worst nightmares.
- At the start of each of their turns, frightened creatures take 8d10 psychic damage.
- For the duration, you are considered to be under the effects of True Sight and can see through the magical darkness.
When the effect ends, you must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of everything for 24 hours. While frightened in this way, you have disadvantage on all ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws.
Curses
Living Nightmares:
Each time the wearer uses Manifest Nightmares or Embrace of Eternal Fear, they must make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, they experience vivid night terrors for 24 hours, making them unable to benefit from a long rest. If the wearer fails this save three times in a row, their deepest fear manifests as a Shadow Demon that relentlessly pursues them until it is slain.
Whispers of Dread:
The wearer constantly hears faint, haunting whispers from the cloak. These whispers erode the wearer’s sense of reality, causing them to see shadowy figures in the corners of their vision. The wearer has disadvantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks and has a 5% chance to hallucinate and treat an ally as an enemy for 1 minute.
Noaptea Veșnică, or "The Cloak of Endless Nightmares," is a terrifying relic imbued with the essence of Morfea, the Goddess of Fear, Shadows, and Nightmares. This cloak is woven from threads of pure shadow and fear, appearing as a flowing, fluid-like material that seems almost alive. The outer layer is pitch black, shifting and rippling as though it exists in multiple planes at once. Small, spectral eyes flicker open and shut along its surface, gazing at unseen horrors in the distance. The inner lining is marked with glowing symbols of fear, paranoia, and dread written in the abyssal tongue.
The cloak is sentient, whispering in soft, incoherent voices to its wielder. It feeds on the wearer’s fears and doubts, drawing power from the terrors of others. Those who gaze too long into its shifting patterns experience flashes of their own nightmares, and the wearer is known to disappear into the darkness with but a thought.
