Coin of Revenge

Wondrous Item

Legendary A Game of Fate

Curse of Misfortune:
When the coin is given or secretly planted on a creature, that creature is cursed with terrible luck. While cursed, the creature suffers from disadvantage on all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws. This curse lasts until the coin is physically removed from the target's person.   Stealth Requirement: Placing the coin on a target without being noticed requires a successful Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check contested by the target’s Wisdom (Perception).   Detection: The coin can be detected if the target makes an Intelligence (Investigation) check (DC 18) to search their person for the source of their misfortune.   Recall the Coin: The coin’s owner can recall it to their pocket as a bonus action, regardless of distance or plane of existence. The coin will vanish from wherever it currently resides and reappear in the owner’s possession. This ability can be used even if the coin is on another creature.
Aura of Malice:
While the coin is in the owner's possession, they emanate a faint, unsettling aura of dread and ill intent. Any creature that attempts to detect or identify the coin's magic senses overwhelming malice. Such creatures must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. While frightened, the creature has disadvantage on saving throws against the coin's effects.
Unerring Precision:
If you use the Curse of Misfortune ability and fail to place the coin on a target, you may attempt to place it again on your next turn without consuming your action. If the second attempt fails, you must wait until the next dawn before trying again.

Enhanced Properties (Post-Attunement)

Master of Fate:
Upon attuning to the coin, you gain immunity to being cursed or having disadvantage imposed on your rolls through magical effects. This does not protect you from the effects of the Coin of Revenge if you lose the wager against Revani.
Dominion of Spite:
You can now implant the coin onto a target remotely. As an action, you can target a creature within 60 feet. The creature must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or have the coin magically appear on their person, hidden within their clothing or on their person. The target is unaware of the coin unless they succeed on an Investigation (DC 18) check.
Revenge Reborn:
If the creature that bears the coin removes it and attempts to destroy it, the coin reappears in your hand immediately, and you gain 10 temporary hit points. If they willingly remove the coin and surrender, they are inflicted with the Curse of Misfortune for 1 minute.
Implacable Vengeance:
If a creature dies while under the effects of the Curse of Misfortune, you can summon a Specter from their soul as an action. This specter serves you for 1 minute before dissipating. This ability can be used once per long rest.

Special Ability - The Gambit of Fate

Once per long rest, you may invoke The Gambit of Fate, calling upon the attention of Revani herself.   Activation: As an action, you flip the coin in the air while calling out "Heads or Tails."   Effect: Roll a d2. If you call it correctly, you gain the following benefits for 1 minute:
  • Immunity to all damage.
  • All your attack rolls automatically roll as critical hits.
  • Frightened and cursed creatures within 30 feet of you automatically fail their saving throws.
However, if you guess incorrectly, you are marked by Revani's Curse:
  • You are instantly affected by the Curse of Misfortune, suffering disadvantage on all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.
  • The mark of the Broken Scale is branded into your palm, and you cannot remove it except through Wish or Divine Intervention.
  • The next time you make an attack roll or saving throw, you automatically fail, and Revani whispers, "Try again, little fool."

Curses

Symbiotic Malice:
Each time the coin is used to curse another creature, you must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, you gain one level of corruption. After three levels of corruption, you are fully bound to Revani’s will, and she gains control over your mind during times of extreme rage.
Mark of Spite:
While attuned, you bear the mark of Revani on your palm — the image of a broken scale. Creatures who see this mark instinctively distrust you. You suffer disadvantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks with non-hostile creatures. Creatures aligned with Revenge or Vengeance (like certain fiends or revenants) may offer you aid or assistance.

The Coin of Revenge is a rusted copper coin, dull and weathered with age. One side bears the faint engraving of a dagger, while the other is marked with a broken scale, symbolizing the imbalance of justice. It exudes a subtle but palpable aura of malice. When held, the coin feels unnaturally cold, like steel left out on a winter's night.

The coin is a vessel of spite and vengeance, embodying the will of Revani, Goddess of Revenge, Hatred, and Assassins. Those who wield it are given the power to curse their enemies with terrible misfortune, though at great risk to themselves. The coin offers a simple but treacherous deal: all it takes is one flip of fate. Win, and you control the power of revenge. Lose, and the coin will haunt you for the rest of your days.
