Abyssal Scourge

Weapon

Legendary Baptism of Pain

Agony Lash:
When the Abyssal Scourge strikes a creature, it causes searing, excruciating pain. The target must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save:
  • The target is incapacitated and cannot take actions, reactions, or bonus actions until the end of its next turn.
  • On a success, the target takes half of the psychic damage but suffers no additional effects.

Torturer’s Secrets:
As an action, you may use the Abyssal Scourge to extract secrets from a restrained creature. The target must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save:
  • The creature is compelled to reveal a piece of information known to them, as if under the effects of the Zone of Truth spell, but the target cannot refuse to answer.
  • The creature takes 4d6 psychic damage and is left shivering and broken, suffering disadvantage on Charisma and Wisdom-based checks for 1 hour.
This ability can be used once per short or long rest.
Willbreaker’s Echo:
When the Abyssal Scourge deals psychic damage to a creature, that creature has disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws until the end of its next turn.
  • If the target is already frightened, it must make a DC 18 Charisma saving throw or become paralyzed with terror for 1 minute.
  • A paralyzed creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Feast on Suffering:
Each time you cause a creature to take psychic damage with the Abyssal Scourge, you gain temporary hit points equal to half the psychic damage dealt. The whip’s barbs seem to drink in the suffering, glowing faintly with dark energy.

Enhanced Properties (Post-Attunement)

When fully attuned to the Abyssal Scourge, its sadistic power awakens. The following enhanced properties become available:
Chains of Despair:
As an action, you can command the scourge to become animated barbed chains. These chains lash out at up to three targets within 30 feet. Each target must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw or be restrained for 1 minute. While restrained, the target takes 3d10 psychic damage at the start of each of its turns. You can end the effect early as a bonus action.
Aura of Torment:
The Abyssal Scourge emits an aura of dread and pain within a 30-foot radius. Hostile creatures that enter the aura or start their turn within it must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be affected by one of the following conditions (determined by the wielder):
  • Frightened for 1 minute.
  • Incapacitated for 1 round as they are overwhelmed with anguish.
  • Blinded for 1 round as their vision fills with horrific visions of torment.
  • The wielder can activate or suppress this aura as a bonus action.

Relentless Agony:
Each time the Abyssal Scourge incapacitates, paralyzes, or restrains a creature, it builds momentum. You gain a +1 to attack rolls and damage rolls for 1 minute, up to a maximum of +5. This bonus resets after 1 minute or when combat ends.

Special Ability - Torment's Revelation

Once per week, the wielder can call upon the full power of the Abyssal Scourge, invoking the might of Votia. As an action, you cast Power Word Pain.
  • Targets affected by this spell experience indescribable agony, becoming incapacitated for 1 minute.
  • While incapacitated, creatures take 6d10 psychic damage at the start of each of their turns.
  • Creatures immune to pain-based effects or psychic damage are still affected by this ability.
  • The wielder takes 5d10 psychic damage as the scourge drains their life force to fuel the spell, and they experience vivid hallucinations of torture and suffering for 24 hours, imposing disadvantage on Insight, Perception, and Charisma-based checks.

Curses

Echoes of Despair:
The scourge whispers to the wielder at all times, and each dawn, the wielder must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save:
  • The wielder is afflicted with intense guilt and despair for 24 hours.
  • They suffer disadvantage on all Wisdom and Charisma-based checks.
After three failed saves, they become tormented by haunting nightmares. The wielder is unable to benefit from a long rest unless under the effects of a Greater Restoration or Remove Curse spell.
Craving for Suffering:
If the wielder goes 24 hours without using the scourge to cause psychic damage to a sentient being, the scourge punishes them, dealing 6d10 psychic damage. This effect bypasses resistance and immunity. The scourge cannot be discarded, and it magically returns to the wielder's possession if separated.
Mark of Votia:
While attuned, the wielder is branded with a mark of pain visible on their chest, neck, or hand. The mark signifies servitude to Votia, and any creatures that serve Votia recognize it instantly. If the wielder attempts to rid themselves of the whip or renounce Votia, the brand glows with intense heat, dealing 6d10 psychic damage and marking them as a heretic, making them a target for Votia's cults and followers.

The Abyssal Scourge is a weapon of pure torment, a barbed whip crafted from dark infernal leather interwoven with veins of black iron and cursed silver. Cruel metal hooks and razor-sharp barbs line its length, each one stained with the anguish of countless souls. The handle is wrapped in blood-red leather, ending in a pommel shaped like a screaming, tormented face. Each crack of the whip releases a haunting chorus of wails and sobs as if the souls of the damned are crying out from within. The Abyssal Scourge is a relic of Votia, goddess of pain, suffering, and despair, a weapon that feeds on agony and strengthens with every lash.
