Votia’s Agony

Ring

Legendary Embrace of Agony

Absorb Pain
While wearing Votia's Agony, the wearer gains a +2 bonus to all saving throws, and is resistant to ALL damage, no matter what, taking only half damage for as long as they wield the ring.
Despair’s Call
Once per day, the wearer can channel the despair stored within Votia's Agony to inspire terror in those nearby. As an action, all hostile creatures within 60 feet must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creatures become frightened for 1 minute. While frightened, creatures must use their movement to get as far from the wearer as possible and have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. Creatures that succeed on this save are immune to Despair's Call for 24 hours.

Enhanced Properties (Post-Attunement)

Aura of Torment
After attuning to Votia's Agony, the wearer exudes an aura of anguish. All creatures within 30 feet of the wearer have disadvantage on Constitution saving throws. This aura can be activated or deactivated as a bonus action.
Pain Breeds Power
For every 25 points of pain stored in Votia's Agony, the wearer gains a cumulative +1 to attack and damage rolls (to a maximum of +3). These bonuses persist only while the stored pain remains in the ring.
Release Agony
Once attuned, the wearer can unleash all stored damage within Votia’s Agony as an attack. As an action, the wearer chooses one creature within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or take all stored damage. On a successful save, they take half damage. The stored pain is then cleared from the ring, and it begins collecting new pain anew.
Chains of Despair
The wearer can summon shadowy chains of anguish to bind a creature they can see within 60 feet. As an action, the wearer forces the target to make a DC 20 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the creature becomes restrained for 1 minute as shadowy chains writhe around their body. While restrained in this way, the creature takes 3d10 psychic damage at the start of each of its turns. The chains last for 1 minute, or until the creature escapes. This ability can be used once per long rest.
Endless Reservoir of Pain
Upon attunement, Votia’s Agony can store double the pain it could before. This allows the ring to store up to 1,000 points of damage, increasing its potential for a catastrophic release.

Curses

Wearing Pain
While attuned to Votia's Agony, the wearer experiences lingering echoes of every ounce of pain it has stored. This discomfort imposes disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws and Perception checks due to constant, phantom sensations of pain.
Eternal Bond of Pain
The ring cannot be removed willingly once attuned. If the wearer attempts to remove it, they must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the wearer experiences intense agony and takes 3d10 psychic damage. If they fail three consecutive attempts to remove the ring, they are permanently cursed, unable to remove any magical rings from their body until the curse is lifted by a Greater Restoration or Wish spell.
Crushing Despair
The whispers of Votia's voice become more prominent the longer the wearer stays attuned. At dawn each day, the wearer must make a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, they are haunted by sorrowful whispers and become frightened for 1 hour. If they fail this saving throw three days in a row, they suffer from long-term madness until the curse is lifted by a Greater Restoration or similar spell.

At first glance, Votia’s Agony appears to be a simple, twisted band of blackened metal, cool to the touch and unassuming in form. However, those who wear it soon discover the depth of its power and its curse. The ring is said to be forged by Votia, the Goddess of Pain, Suffering, and Torture, and it carries with it the burden of endless anguish. Unbeknownst to most, every wound the wearer sustains is partially absorbed into the ring, which stores this pain in a hidden reservoir of suffering. This latent energy can be unleashed, but those unaware of this truth risk catastrophic harm if they attempt to remove the ring.

When attuned, the ring becomes a vessel for pain, collecting and storing it like a well of misery. Those who wield it can harness this suffering as a weapon against others, but at a cost. Over time, the wearer begins to feel the weight of every ounce of pain it stores, their body aching with unseen wounds and their mind eroded by whispers of despair.

The ring's shifting black glow intensifies as pain is stored within it, and faint, ghostly wails of agony can be heard by those who stand nearby. Those who peer too long at the ring claim to see fleeting glimpses of tormented faces screaming from within its reflection.
