Veil of the Midnight Empress
Wondrous Item
Legendary Feast of the Shadow Mistress
Eyes of the Night:
The wearer gains darkvision out to 120 feet. If the wearer already possesses darkvision, it is extended by 60 feet. Additionally, the wearer can see through magical darkness created by spells of 7th level or lower.
Night’s Embrace:
The wearer can cast the Darkness spell at will without expending a spell slot or requiring material components. When the wearer casts Darkness in this way, the wearer can see through it, and the darkness cannot be dispelled by non-magical light.
Shadow Servants:
Once per long rest, the wearer may summon three Shadow Servants, ethereal beings that act as enhanced spies and scouts. These entities function as Shadows (as per the stat block) but are enhanced to be immune to being turned. The servants remain for up to 1 hour, following the wearer’s mental commands. If reduced to 0 hit points, they vanish in a swirl of shadow and return to the veil.
Vampiric Glamour:
As an action, the wearer can charm a creature within 30 feet. The target must make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target is charmed for 1 hour and becomes vulnerable to necrotic damage, taking an additional 2d6 necrotic damage from all sources. The charmed creature sees the wearer as a trusted ally and follows their commands, so long as they are not harmful. This ability can be used once per long rest.
Nightfall’s Blessing:
While wearing the veil, the wearer gains resistance to necrotic damage and advantage on saving throws against abilities or spells that deal necrotic damage. Additionally, while in dim light or darkness, the wearer has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and can move without leaving any tracks or trails, even in mud, snow, or sand.
Sunlight Protection:
Creatures that are harmed by sunlight, such as vampires, are shielded from its effects while wearing the veil. The wearer takes no damage from sunlight, and they suffer no penalties related to exposure to daylight. This protection lasts as long as the veil is worn and attuned.
Enhanced Properties (Post-Attunement)
Once the wearer has completed the attunement ritual, they gain access to enhanced properties, reflecting Xora's growing influence.
Shadow Sovereign:
The wearer is no longer affected by fear effects, and if an enemy attempts to impose the frightened condition, the attempt is reflected back at the source. The enemy must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of the wearer for 1 minute.
Shroud of Eternal Night:
While attuned to the veil, the wearer can become invisible in dim light or darkness as a bonus action. The invisibility lasts until they attack, cast a spell, or enter bright light. The wearer can use this ability three times per long rest.
The Hidden Star:
The wearer’s movements are shielded by the influence of night. While in darkness, the wearer can teleport up to 60 feet to a location they can see that is also in dim light or darkness. This ability can be used three times per long rest.
Special Power - Midnight’s Dominion
Once per month, the wearer may invoke Midnight’s Dominion, summoning the raw power of night and shadow.
Effect: As an action, the wearer creates a 60-foot-radius sphere of magical darkness centered on themselves. This darkness is supernatural and cannot be dispelled by spells of 9th level or lower.
Damage: All creatures within the darkness must make a DC 22 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, they take 10d10 necrotic damage and are blinded for 1 minute. On a successful save, they take half as much damage and are not blinded.
Temporary Hit Points: The wearer gains temporary hit points equal to the total necrotic damage dealt.
Cost: After using this ability, the wearer gains two levels of exhaustion as the veil siphons their life force to fuel the darkness.
Curses
Gaze of the Midnight Empress:
Each time the wearer uses Vampiric Glamour or Shadow Servants, they must make a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the wearer gains 1 level of Shadow Corruption. Upon reaching 3 levels of Shadow Corruption, the wearer becomes vulnerable to radiant damage and must consume the life force of a living creature within 24 hours or suffer from Shadow Decay, taking 4d10 necrotic damage every 24 hours.
Shadowbound Soul:
The wearer’s soul becomes partially bound to Xora. If the wearer is reduced to 0 hit points, they must make a DC 18 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, their soul is transported to Xora’s realm in the Shadowfell, where it remains unconscious until the wearer is revived. On a successful save, the wearer is stabilized but cannot be healed until the start of their next turn.
Haunting Whispers:
The veil constantly whispers to the wearer in Xora’s voice, filling their mind with dark thoughts and secrets. Each dawn, the wearer must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, they suffer from disturbing visions, imposing disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks until the next dawn. If the wearer fails three consecutive saving throws, they suffer from Nightmare Madness, which can only be cured by a greater restoration or wish spell.
The Veil of the Midnight Empress is an ethereal, shadowy veil that appears to be woven from the very fabric of night itself. It drapes delicately over the wearer's face, leaving only their eyes visible. The fabric shimmers faintly like a starry sky, and a subtle aura of twilight follows its movements. Legends claim it was woven by Xora, the Shadow Maiden, as a gift for her chosen champions.
The veil grants its wearer mastery over the night, shadow, and darkness, allowing them to walk the boundary between the material plane and the Shadowfell. Those who wear it are veiled from sight, shielded from the sun, and empowered with the authority of the midnight itself. But the price of such power is steep, as the veil whispers incessantly, calling the wearer to the path of Xora’s shadowy dominion.
