Maeve's Manageable Menagerie

Wondrous Item

Very Rare

Expansive Entrance: Any creature that passes through the terrarium’s door will be deposited in one of the active biomes at random, unless the name of a specific biome is spoken while it enters. The door itself is small, but if a creature larger than the door itself place any bodypart inside the doorway, that bodypart will disappear within up to the next joint.

Incomplete creatures are not placed within a biome and will instead be suspended above the interior as a whole, allowing them to view and reconfigure all ten regions within the terrarium. By continuing to move forwards, a larger creature can eventually enter the terrarium entirely, at which point it will be deposited in a biome.

Summon Creature: You can summon a creature stored inside the terrarium by opening the door and speaking its name. Creatures not magically bonded or otherwise trained to respond to you may require a DC 14 Animal Handling check (increased to DC 19 if animosity exists between the creature and caller).

Biome Configuration: You can configure the terrarium’s biomes to cater to a variety of creatures. The terrarium can contain up to 10 different regions, each of which spans 5 hectares, and multiple can be configured to the same biome as needed. Each biome includes magically created food and water, allowing it to sustain its current inhabitants indefinitely.

Available biomes are:

  • Grassland
  • Forest
  • Mountain
  • River
  • Ocean
  • Snow
  • Swamp
  • Desert
  • Volcano
  • Shadowfell
  • Feywild

Calm Sanctuary: Creatures stored within the terrarium are affected by a Calm Emotions spell (CHA save DC 21) while inside, granting a tranquil environment. They can attempt to break free from this effect after 24 hours, 1 week, and again upon one year, enabling the terrarium

Oops All Snakes: The menagerie can be thrown as a simple bludgeoning weapon, or the top can be flipped open to immediately release all of the contained creatures in a 15' cone. The swarm of creatures can make a bite attack as a bonus action on your turn. They will obey your orders on a DC(12 + number of creatures) Animal Handling check. They are not automatically friendly to yourself or your allies unless you have done something to ensure their loyalty.

Maeve’s Manageable Menagerie appears as a beautifully crafted golden terrarium approximately eight inches tall, with a carrying ring affixed to the top and an ornate latched door on one side.

Upon closer inspection, the interior displays a miniature version of the active biomes, including tiny representations of any creatures currently within.

When opened, the terrarium emits a faint, soothing hum, and a gentle breeze wafts out, carrying with it the scents of diverse ecosystems.

Crafted by the renowned warlock Maeve Babin, this terrarium was originally commissioned by her nephew, who wanted somewhere safe to keep his collection of snakes while he went adventuring.

Legend has it that the interior biomes were crafted from a stolen section of the Astral Sea, and then shaped to Maeve’s will.

What, precisely, she thought her nephew would be hoping to store inside the terrarium is unclear - but the size and scale of the final creation lead to a number of concerning possibilities.
