One Sunday in the Inland Empire, Southern California. The heat hangs over the asphalt long after the sun goes down.
Pastor Daniel Toomey preaches at Gleaning Field to two hundred people carrying things no one else can see. In the congregation sits a teenage girl with her sleeves pulled down over her hands. Across town, a daughter cares for a mother who is forgetting her, a junkyard owner waits for the right car, a woman breaks in to rescue a dog, a man drives home with a recording he shouldn't have, and someone stands outside the church as the lights go out.
Seven people, each headed for their own edge. None of them knows they have been seen. None of them knows what is waiting to move in when they fall.
