Story 9: What a coincidence... not

It was looking to be a quiet day in the office. Just endless paperwork as Sky and Aero work their way through finalizing the work for the latest case they’re working on. Everyone was minding their own business, heads deep in centimetres upon centimetres of paper. The quiet was broken by Sarah walking into the room, a shadowed figure behind her. Sky hears a noise outside and turns to look out the window, there they see a bird, after a few moments they realise it was the bird that had dropped off the poster, curious they thought.

The bird lands on the windowsill, and the badge featuring a familiar D around the bird’s neck made Sky stop. Sarah then clears her throat and asks for everyone’s attention.

“Hey everyone, I’d like to introduce our new legal intern,” she steps over to allow the figure behind her to walk into light, “do you want to introduce yourself?”

Sky turns around and looks at Sarah, finally pulling together all the pieces as the person in front of them introduces themselves.

“Hello, I’m Rawon Dashi, and I will be having my apprenticeship under your care.”

Aero almost leaps from his seat, filled with such energy and excitement, reaching out his hand to greet the new apprentice.

“It’s so nice to have you here with us,” Aero beams with his biggest smile.

Rawon, dismissive of mind reading etiquette, instantly perceives Aero’s good intentions and is almost overwhelmed by his openness and generosity. He took Aero’s hand and shook it, returning the gesture. It was a firm handshake, not too soft like traditional women, but not too hard like traditional men, something more contemporary and in between, the perfect mix  between the two.

Sky stands behind her desk, the puzzle pieces suddenly fitting together. Everyone in the office slowly nodded at Rawon before awaiting Sarah’s announcement of who Rawon was to work with. Sky sighs, somehow surprise seeping away, it wouldn’t have been hard for Rawon to get where she is, although it still doesn’t make his sudden appearance less suspicious after their encounter a few days ago.

Sky’s attention returns to Sarah as she begins to speak.

“You are probably all wondering who Rawon will work with,” there are affirmative sounds and gestures all around the room. “Well, after taking a lot of things into consideration and since I know Aero has just been assigned a new case that will take up a lot of his time, Rawon will be working under Sky for the next couple of months.”

There is a moment of silence before everyone quickly loses interest and returns to their still sky high piles of paperwork.

“Nice to have you with us, Dashi,” Sky greets, and gestures for Rawon to follow them. “Come, I’ll show you around.”

Sky leads him out of the workspace and somewhere more private, to ask some questions of course.

“So … any particular reasons why you tracked me down all the way to my workplace, Dashi?” Sky asks, nonchalantly going through the documents in their hands.

“You never were a very socially adept person were you? Always too reliant on your abilities.” Rawon replies, letting on no information about his peculiar intentions.

“Well, whatever your reasons are, you’ll be here to work. Legal apprenticeships are demanding and require your full commitment. If you can’t provide that, I will be talking to Sarah,” Sky said. “Now, here are the first basic things you need to know, just have a read through them.”

“Well, since you mention basic things… Why not tell me about your colleagues? How about that Aero guy to start.” Rawon enquires.

“Aero is the other junior associate in the firm. He works with me, so in some instances you will be working with him as well,” Sky answers flatly. Rawon nods and Sky continues. “There is also Washi, she’s a paralegal and also my friend.”

Rawon did the best of his mind-reading ability to scan Sky’s when they were talking about Aero, but there are no particular feelings that stand out, just a glimpse of blurred memories of work and fondness to some extent.

Suddenly, speaking of the devil himself, Aero appears greeting them both, he politely asks for a second of Sky’s time and leaves them to finish their conversation.

Sky smiles and nods as Aero leaves the room, and Rawon’s mind wanders as he senses a new feeling in the room...
