Tav chewed the inside of her cheek, twirling the tip of her braid between her fingers. Both speakers in the silent conversation kept their hands still. Tav dearly wanted to know what they were saying. The residual magic permeating from the sphere coated every inch of Tav; vibrating cold, oily and depressing - like the curse from Reithwin but muted. At least Karlach and Lae'zel were here. They stood on either side of her, and she had Shadowheart squarely within view.
The three observers never took their eyes off the exchange between Shadowheart and the masked woman. Their stern, unmoving expression made it harder to read what little information Tav could glean.
Tav rubbed her mid-section, hoping to ease away the butterflies there. Her gaze flitted to Shadowheart. Whose mouth pulled down, and she said something, which promptly led the other woman to remove her mask. Shifting her weight, Tav and the other onlookers held their position when the drow raised her hand. Instead of trouble, the woman merely snapped her fingers and dispelled the silence. However, the conversation continued.
Unmasked, the drow said, "Give me the honour of my title and name. In full."
Shadowheart shook her head. "I... I can't. My memories-"
She sneered. "I know what's in that head of yours better than you do, girl. My name."
Shadowheart glared back, her jaw worked until she replied, "Mother Superior. The Inquirer of Grief. Viconia DeVir."
The Mother Superior stood, sighing. "At least you have the wits to recognise your betters. Good." She beckoned to the wall and a section of it undulated, disappearing to reveal a staircase. "Now descend - you have much to answer for."
Shadowheart leaned forward, but before a response could leave her lips, the Inquirer of Grief's image flickered and snuffed out.
Karlach straightened and uncrossed her arms. "An astral projection. Very clever. I'll stay on my toes around that one."
Tav pursed her lips, squinting at the new door. "Not to mention we're going in blind." She gestured to the darkness and asked Shadowheart, "Can you remember anything?"
Shadowheart rose and lined herself up with the door. "Maybe." She cast her gaze over her shoulder and said, "Either way, I'm ready."
Tav nodded and moved to collect the rest of their companions from the corridor outside. More stern faces followed and they descended the staircase into the gloom below.
--- --- ---
Gale's neck was on a swivel and he asked in awe, "Is this part of the Undercity?"
"No, its-", Shadowheart's ponytail swayed as she shook her head, trying to remember. "The Cloister of Sombre Embrace."
Astarion drawled. "How fitting. This place is miserable, even for a god."
Noises of agreement went round and as they walked; the rot of the place enveloped them slowly. Nyx took a steadying breath with every step as the shadows became deeper. The shadows would move out of the corner of her eye, yawning at her, but no presence stood within. Her blemish felt rigid and icy against her skin.
The stone corridor and its stairs gave way to a wider corridor. Nyx breathed easier, but the shades stalked their party, regardless. It was much like the temple of Shar they had encountered during the Underdark, though muted and dull. Not as grand in scale, neither splendour. Both had been lost, resulting in a cramped and uncared-for space. Whereas the ambient power retained its edge; a predator in waiting. Nyx latched onto Shadowheart's voice instead while lost memories slowly returned to her.
Pointing to a set of large doors on the left, Shadowheart said, "The library and lecture hall." Then on the opposite side, "Dining."
She paused and Tav prompted, "Something wrong?"
Shadowheart flashed her a smile. "Other than the obvious? No... There is something else, but I can't remember." She pressed forward.
Halfway down the next set of passageways, a voice boomed from the chamber ahead. A circular door came into view, constructed to represent the symbol of Shar.
Shadowheart provided, "The auditorium, training barracks and dormitories are through here."
Upon hearing Shadowheart's name, their group rooted in place and listened to the speaker.
"...You already heard how she disgraced herself before Lady Shar. Marked as the enemy. Now you will see it for yourself!"
Shadowheart's hands fisted at her sides, and the lecture continued, "Let it be a cautionary tale, studied by the initiates for years to come!"
Shadowheart scowled at the door and retreated, ushering the others away from the booming voice.
They huddled and Shadowheart whispered, "Viconia has assembled the entire cloister. We'll be surrounded."
Karlach rolled her shoulders. "Then we'll fuck them up."
"I don't disagree, but..." Shadowheart's brows knit in concentration.
Tav asked, "You have a plan?"
She gave them a reassuring smile and replied, "How much of the invisibility and pass-without-a-trace scrolls do we have left?"
Wyll answered, "Plenty. We barely used any during the scouting."
Shadowheart's smile grew sly. "Then I have a plan."
Returning to the circular door, the voice declared the Absolute's defeat by the followers of Shar once they had secured the artefact and turned the disaffected back to the Lady of Darkness.
Shadowheart retrieved Lathander's mace. "Enough of this drivel." She touched the door, beckoning it to open and the rest of them fell into step around her.
---
There must have been dozens of Sharrans littering the tiered platforms of the auditorium.
Graces.
Nyx was grateful for Shadowheart's foresight in the matter. Things would have been bloody and dire otherwise. Eyes followed them from hooded cowls and masks, sneering 'traitor' and 'scorned' while their group passed. Lathander's mace cut through the darkness; it writhed and fled. Tav and Shadowheart approached Viconia, who stood on the podium.
The Inquirer greeted, "I am very glad you decided to return. Shar may have exiled you, but perhaps I can make a case for some small measure of mercy. Give me the artefact, and I can make your end quick."
Jeers rose from the crowd, and Nyx slid the scroll further down her sleeve.
Shadowheart spat and pointed at Viconia, "I don't answer to you anymore. I'm here for my family."
The hall went silent, and there was no reply.
"That's right. I know what you did. And it's not going to be quick - not for you."
A mocking smile split Viconia's lips and she swept her hand over the crowd. "This is your family. And now you have turned your back on us too. The artefact was your last chance to prove yourself - and you squandered it. A shame seeing as you were the only one to return with it."
Shadowheart's grip tightened around Lathander's mace. "I should thank you. If you hadn't sent me on that suicide mission, I'd never have learned the truth."
The Inquirer addressed Tav as though noting her presence for the first time. "You there - surrender this one to me, now, and you can consider Lady Shar's forces your allies in the battles to come."
All of Shadowheart's companions barked a laugh at the same time.
Karlach bellowed, "Fat chance lady."
Tav confirmed, "Never."
Viconia straightened, and the crowd stirred; the sounds of weapons being drawn bounced off the walls. Nyx and the others had their scrolls ready.
Viconia sneered and hoisted her weapon in the air. "As you like. L'il Alurl! For Shar!"
Roars rose from the surrounding Sharrans, drowning out Nyx and her companion's invocations.
An airy veil had settled over Nyx as the non-detection spell reinforced her invisibility. She laid her whiskers down and movement stirred around her as her companions dispersed in different directions. Nyx kept flush against the wall of an auditorium tier, creeping along towards her assigned destination.
In the distance, several unfamiliar voices cried out in pain, followed by shouts from the Sharrans that the intruders were in different places at once. Nyx allowed herself a small grin of satisfaction. The Sharrans' advantage was dissolving quickly and Viconia struggled to regroup what forces hadn't already rushed after their supposed targets.
Nyx reached the shadows and a tall figure brushed against her whiskers. She let Karlach pass. Carefully, they snuck into the training area. Nyx scurried out of the doorway when a group of Sharrans rushed into the room in search of their quarry. Their leader barked orders, and the group split up to inspect the adjacent rooms.
Out of earshot and out of sight, Karlach had reached a section of deep shadow and projected into the darkness, "Psst, psst. ShadowLach to ShadowNyx. Can you hear me?"
Nyx snorted and whispered back, "I'm here. Ready?"
"The hammer's gonna fall."
Barely containing their tactless snickers, they headed for the closest of the adjacent rooms.
---
Nyx dove behind one of the training dummies and the assailant's mace got stuck in its chest, splinters flying. Down on one knee, Nyx returned a flurry of knives at the exposed legs of the cleric. He flailed to the ground where the second set of poison knives carved into his face.
"I'll kill you!", the leader of the dwindling group bellowed, and all five set upon Nyx at the same time.
Wrapping her legs in magic, Nyx darted from the combat room back into the main training hall. Before she could reach the exit, the leader shouted a command at the door and it sealed. Nyx skidded to a halt and turned on her heel in the nick of time. With the door now at her back, she faced the Sharrans head on, her knives suspended in the air.
The Sharran leader laughed and pointed with her morning star, "Little rabbit, you've been snared. Die!"
Before the words could convert into action, Karlach materialised from the shadows and cleaved a wide arc with her martle axe. Blood spurted a semi circle on the floor. The nearest Sharran had lost her head, while each successive one was dealt an injury less severe than the former. Another collapsed to the floor, clutching their slit throat; his blood coated the dark tiles.
Nyx was already moving, her knives reaching the farthest Sharran, lodging in a light armoured chest as the healing spell fell from the opponent's lips. Karlach set upon the leader with a roaring challenge, igniting sparks from the clash of weapons.
Retrieving her quarterstaff mid-run, Nyx parried a swooping blow from the sword-wielder. A gurgling incantation started again as the injured cleric desperately tried to heal herself. Nyx reinforced one end of her quarterstaff with a lump of magic and swung hard at the fighter, overpowering his counter and forcing his blade into his shoulder. He cried out and stumbled back, a tangle of blade, blood, and body. The precious pause in their duel allowed Nyx to sweep her staff backwards, clipping the cleric on the head and cutting off the next healing spell. Now swaying, the healer toppled over, breathing loudly while Nyx's other assailant recovered. The cleric had managed a small group healing spell before Nyx could stop her. No matter, neither the fighter, nor his leader was going to last much longer.
Nyx retrieved her knives and lined them along her staff. Handicapped both in speed and reach, the fighter fumbled his attacks while Nyx tore him down in a series of quick knife jabs and bludgeoning blows. A last knife lodged in his neck, using her staff Nyx drove it into bone with a disconcerting pop, severing his spine. She spared a quick glance at Karlach, who was grappling with the leader, their weapons interlocked.
Karlach threw a thundering punch, rattling the leader's helmet. Her other hand shot out, grabbing the helmet and ripping it clean off. A kick to the interlocked weapons shoved the Sharran back, and she tumbled over her feet as the pile of metal crashed her into the floor. While Karlach continued to beat the life out of the fallen leader, Nyx finished off the unconscious cleric in one last painless gesture.
The sound of pounding flesh stopped and an eerie silence settled over the area. Karlach straightened and blew a stray hair out of her face. She surveyed the scene and gave Nyx a double thumbs up. "Poor fuckers."
Shouting from outside the door made them retrieve their weapons and take up position at each side, ready for the next group of idiots to come barging in. Needless to say, they were dealt with accordingly. After which, Nyx and Karlach headed for the smallest offshoot room.
---
The scent of crisp greens mingled with soft florals and earthy browns. Nyx scanned the new area and said, "I would suggest not touching anything."
"Wasn't going to. Looks like the bad kinda dangerous."
Nyx inclined her head. True.
Bottles, powders, leaves, flowers, roots, and whole plants lined the shelves, tables, and even hung from the walls. Nyx identified each of them, from foxglove to wolfsbane. Poisons, every last one.
She squinted at the wall, looking for the emblem. A faint shadow was its only trace; the outline of an orchid flower nestled between two cupboards. Nyx retrieved the real deal from her pack and held the dusty blue flower up to the emblem. It glowed in response and something behind the cupboard clicked. Karlach helped heave the piece of furniture open, which functioned as a door and they slid inside, muting the encroaching voices as they shut the door behind them.
A dark, winding corridor led them away, their footsteps muffled by the carpet of moss growing underfoot. Soon familiar voices flitted down the passageway. The corridor opened into a larger cave. Nyx drew up short, and Karlach gasped a 'whoa' when an underground field of night orchids sprawled before them. Like a fairytale, the night orchids' glow was mirrored by luminescent mushrooms from above, casting everything in a calming blue light. Silhouettes of their companions were gathered at the opposite end of the field, and they joined them.
Tav beamed at Nyx and Karlach, "You made it!"
"And without a scratch." Wyll said, nodding.
Halsin stood from a nearby rock and said, "The Sharrans are drawing the short stick." He turned to Shadowheart, who was holding a night orchid to her nose. "I recall them being more organised last time round."
She gave him a knowing wink and beckoned with an open hand to the glowing field. "This place has been forgotten, I found it by happenstance as a child. And I suppose competent friends help too." Several of them sucked in a breath at that and Tav's grin matched Karlach's. Shadowheart cast her gaze at the flowers, and a fleeting frown touched her forehead. "I used to come here with a friend, though I can't remember who." She shrugged and said to the newcomers, "We're only waiting for Lae'zel, Gale and Astarion."
Nyx felt a brush of movement against her whiskers.
"I heard my name. Good to know I'm on everyone's mind." Astarion congealed from the shadows, startling almost everyone.
Shadowheart shot him a blistering glare while the last of the stragglers regrouped.
The respite was short-lived as Shadowheart explained the next steps in her plan and they dispersed to thoroughly eliminate the remaining Sharrans.
At least one good thing about the parasites.
Tadpole communication between their companions proved invaluable to Shadowheart's strategy. They orchestrated a targeted assault on several fronts, picking off Sharran teams by using their own tactics against them. Shadows, hidden passageways, and ambushes.
Nyx and her strike group tightened the noose around Viconia. It was tiring and precise work, but it paid off when they had Viconia and a pitiful handful of her followers surrounded in the auditorium. The rest of their companions joined, and the final scuffle wasn't noteworthy. Outnumbered, outmatched and outsmarted, the entire cloister of Sombre Embrace had been culled in a single coordinated extermination.
Shadowheart loomed over a bloodied Viconia as she lay sprawled on the floor, holding up a hand to shield her face from Lathander's streaming light. The fallen Inquirer spat blood on the floor and croaked, squinting up at Shadowheart, "Finish it. Send me to Lady Shar's embrace."
"My parents. Where are they?"
A grimace through bloodied teeth replied, and she clutched at her side. "So... so blunt - have you forgotten all the interrogation techniques I taught you? Where is the finesse?"
"No more games! Answer me!"
The former inquirer of Shar pointed weakly to the far end of the auditorium. "They are right through that door, in the Chamber of Loss. Where they have been all along." She smiled and savoured the words, "You saw them many times, only we made you forget. But they didn't forget."
Shadowheart's jaw worked, but she stood fast while Viconia continued. "They watched, as we moulded you. They watched. They wept. They bled - often at your hand. It may not be a happy reunion, but it will be a memorable one."
Nyx set her mouth in a line, her blemish itching tenfold and she crossed her arms. Given what we've seen at Reithwin, none of us should be surprised. Another religion forged in pettiness, cruelty, and senseless death. Why do people follow them so eagerly?
Shadowheart drew herself up and asked, "Why? Why me? Why all this effort?"
Viconia's bluster was waning, and she grimaced again. "Shar commanded me. And I obeyed. I do not question - I merely act as she wills me to." She stared at her reflection in the blood pooling beneath her. "I had an enclave in Waterdeep, you know. Much grander that this. Shar ordered me to raze it, kill all who followed me - claim they betrayed me, when in fact I slew those who showed nothing but loyalty." With growing pain, she looked back at Shadowheart. "Shar had me do that, and I did. To cover my tracks. To usher in you."
"What are you talking about?"
A faltering smile. "You became my mission. To take a child of Selune's, and turn her over to Lady Shar. To show that all light fades, and darkness will prevail in the end. All this was to make you into what the Dark Lady needed you to be... The planning, the training. Those deaths in Waterdeep. It was all to groom you to replace me at her right hand side." Viconia took a choking breath and sneered, "And still, you threw it away."
Nyx shook her head along with most of the rest of her companions, including Shadowheart. "I want to see my parents. And I don't care what happens to you or this place. You've been in my head long enough already." Shadowheart motioned toward the Chamber of Loss.
Viconia spun around, coughing up blood at the movement. "What are you doing? Come back and finish this yourself! You owe me that!"
Shadowheart paused, but didn't spare her a glance, and merely said, "Let go, Mother... Embrace loss."
---
Upon entering the chamber; Nyx's lungs heaved for air while her blemish cut daggers into her neck and her vision went black for a moment. Ice tore at Nyx's heart and the world narrowed, both in sight and sound. Dazed, she reached out for purchase.
A steady pressure wrapped around both her elbows, one warm and one cool, and she was suddenly back in the chamber. Karlach to her right and Astarion to her left. Forcing her breath to steady she anchored herself in the comforting presence of their support.
Unable to look at them, Nyx said breathlessly, "I... I think this is as far as I can go."
Someone replied... Tav. "You two stay here with Nyx and keep watch. We'll push on ahead."
Shadowheart affirmed, "We'll see you soon."
The other said something she didn't quite catch. Nyx's head was throbbing, but she remembered they were here for something important, and her mouth managed the words 'good luck'. Then she was ushered out of the chamber by her companions.
--- --- ---
Tav rubbed her arms, trying not to shiver. The ambient magic draped itself over her. Seeping. Sinking. Cold, so cold. The same sensation as when Tav had plunged into the gleaming pool in Shar's temple. Every step was sluggish. If it affected Shadowheart, she didn't show it.
In the centre of the chamber stood an enormous mirror, pitch black. Something within stirred as they approached and Tav's music strummed as though being scoured by sharp nails. She had to keep her feet firmly planted not to flee the room immediately. Witnessing Shadowheart touch the mirror didn't help with the tugging at her feet.
Nothing happened, and Tav let out a breath. Shadowheart inspected the mirror and admitted that she didn't know what it was for. Tav and the rest agreed that it's best left alone; taking in the rest of the chamber instead.
Three rooms branched off the central area. A quick investigation provided an empty interrogation room (much to Tav's relief) to the right, and a records room that would have to wait for later to the left. The third straight ahead had them pausing at the door, staring at the plaque.
'The Cells'.
Tav swallowed and gave Shadowheart a reassuring pat on the shoulder. They collectively braced themselves and stepped through the gate.
'The Cells' unfurled before them; wall-less and consumed by an endless black chasm below that made Tav's head spin. A central disc was suspended on the platform. It floated at the bottom of a series of stairs, reminding Tav of the disc back in Shar's underground temple, the one held by Shar's dancing statue.
The shadows receded as Shadowheart took the lead, Lathander's mace cleaving through them. Tav forced her feet to move and to stay within the security of the sun god's power.
When Shadowheart stepped onto the platform, it felt as though all the air had been sucked out of the room and the darkness closed in around Tav. Lathander's light flared and Shadowheart raised it above her head.
A voice from the dark made Tav jump. "Come to torment us again?"
"No dearest, whomever it is bring sunlight. Whoever you are, step forward so we can see you."
Shadowheart's magic swelled and Lathander's mace replied, lighting up the area in a blaze of brilliance. Tav stopped dead in her tracks, and her breath caught at the sight of two people, chained vertically to suspended discs.
By Tymora, what have they done?
The bedraggled man gasped, "It can't be. Another vile trick..."
Their faces gaunt and pale. Their clothing and hair unkept. Recent and old blood smeared their bodies and the floor. Tav wanted to rush to them, but a terrible glacial lance burned a path from her feet to her mouth. Invisible irons had shut around her ankles.
The woman's bright and pleased laugh made the shadows bristle at the sound. "No... there is no trick. It's her. Jenevelle. Jen. Our little girl."
Shadowheart stepped forward, holding the light up to their faces. She had her back to Tav, but her head moved between the two as though grasping for recognition.
The man sighed. "Moonmaiden's grace. It's true... our Jen has returned."
Shadowheart reached out to each of them in turn. "I've come to get you out of here. They're all gone, it's over..." Her focus shifted to their bindings.
Still Tav's feet refused to move no matter how much she wanted to, and her lips wouldn’t form words to dispel it. She snatched at her music, but it would not answer. The darkness thickened, its fingers crept onto the platform, heading straight for them. Her lungs burned and her throat became raw; she gulped for air while the absence claimed her, seeping mercilessly inwards.
Is this what Nyx felt every time? Nine hells!
A weight compressed Tav's magic, making her vision blur briefly. Then She came.
Shar is here!
Shadowheart's head snapped to the darkness and the outline of Shar's mask carved itself from the void. Lathander's light flickered to an ember under the oppressive entity’s power.
Shar announced, "It is not over." She spared a glance at Shadowheart's parents. "You see? It matters not if you raze this place, if you slay every one of your brothers and sisters. That was never where my power resided." Shadowheart cried out in pain, fell to her knees and clutched her hand to her chest. She held fast to Lathander's mace, and Shar continued to loom over them. "Every time you try to step away from me, every time you try to reach for Selune, my hold on you bites deeper. If you had learned, if you had obeyed, there would be no pain. But you struggle on. You make things worse on yourself. And for them."
The hoarse cry of Shadowheart's parents made Tav's magic surge against her restraints. Alas, to no avail. Yet it loosened the grip on her voice and Tav projected, "You are a monster, not a goddess!"
Shar replied matter-of-factly, "I am neither. I am nothing. I am the empty room. The dreamless sleep. The shadow's shadow. There was no pain before my sister set the sun aflame." She addressed Shadowheart, "Now you exist to suffer, until you find your way back to my embrace."
Shadowheart stood on wobbly legs, still clutching her hand to her chest. "I'm taking my parents away from here. I'm taking them away from you."
Shadowheart's father spoke in a strained voice, "You cannot. We are still bound to you. You cannot both free us and free yourself from her curse. The Moonmaiden needs you more than she needs us. You are the future - you must return to the fold. We are the past. And our duty is almost done."
Shar cutoff Shadowheart's protest. "Eloquently put. His mind stood up well to his time here. The same cannot be said for your mother - such brief, fragile lives humans lead. This is my final lesson. I have brought you here, to dwell on your mistakes and to make your choice."
The mask of Shar withdrew, and the pressure lifted from Tav's chest; her hands drew her weapons upon their release. But Shar had left, and a queasiness rose in Tav's stomach as the reckoning of her parting words made itself known.
Lathander's power returned, the shadows pulled back, and Shadowheart said, "She's gone... I don't understand."
Her father managed to speak in a gentle tone, "Shar will never admit defeat - not until she has stolen one last thing from you. We cannot allow your future to be her last prize - not after all your mother and I have endured to see you again. Your companion understands, I think." He raised his eyes to meet Tav's and implored, "Help her, please. Help her see what must be done."
Tav didn't want it to be true. Tymora, please let it not be true. This cannot be how the dice fell.
It did not matter what her heart wanted; Tav knew Shar would not allow it. She cleared her throat and said to an expectant Shadowheart, "You have to choose, Shadowheart. Free your parents, or rid yourself of Shar's curse."
Tav hated every word she had spoken once the shock on Shadowheart's face turned to disbelief.
Shadowheart spun around and shouted, "No! I can't. I came here to save you!"
The smile on her mother's face was enough to make Tav's heart break.
Shadowheart's father replied, "And you did. You found us. All these years, that dream kept us going, that you would break free. No matter what they made you do to us, we knew you were still in there."
Her mother's gaze became distant and she mused, "I knew the dark woods wouldn't frighten you. You were always such a brave girl."
He nodded and said, "She was. And still is. You've saved us. Now save yourself. You'll be out of Shar's reach, and we'll be at peace."
Shadowheart's voice was raw, and she all but begged, "But I only just found you again, after all this time. I can't lose you again!"
Tav's eyes were welling up at the tears streaming from Shadowheart's father's eyes. He reassured, "We'll still be with you. By the Moonmaiden's grace, we'll never be far. Please Jenevelle."
Shadowheart's head fell, and she asked in a weak voice, "Is this truly what you want?"
He said with an endless gentleness, "It is what we need, all of us. You were meant to be a guiding light for Selune's faithful, but they robbed you from us. Now that can be righted, and we can rest."
And her mother said her farewell, "I've seen your face again. I can let go, knowing that you found yourself."
Tav barely caught Shadowheart's 'goodbye' as she reluctantly extended her magic to them. The darkness faded, and Tav was blinded by light emanating from her parents. It outshone Lathander's mace, and for a moment; soft, warming rays streamed into every corner of the prison.
The parting words of Shadowheart's father reached them, "Not goodbye. Not even close."
Tav dropped her shielding hand to find Shadowheart encircled by several floating lights. They swirled around her, trailing tails of moonlight. Tav asked, "What are those?"
Shadowheart smiled at them fondly and caressed each before they headed for the door. "Moon motes. They bring Selune's light to dark places and offer guidance to those in need." She gazed for a long time after, and then at her wounded hand. She closed it into a fist. "My parents are watching over me. Let's leave this place. There's nothing more for me here."
Tav's reply came out more bluntly than she meant for it to, "Gladly."
Shadowheart surveyed the room one final time. "I don't know where home is anymore... but it's not here."

The Cloister was a challenge and I was racking my brain to come up with something different. But there wasn't much to change since the game's version took Shadowheart's arc to its natural conclusion. Thus, I tried to focus on doing it justice instead, but without some big 'final showdown battle' - since that would have felt out of place in this instance given Shadowheart's personality and skills. Besides, the 'showdown' was with more with Shar than Viconia...
