The Voidstaff

Staff

Legendary Rite of the Void

Arcane Conduit:
The Voidstaff serves as an elite spellcasting focus. While attuned to it, the wielder gains:
  • +3 bonus to spell attack rolls and spell save DCs.
  • The ability to ignore the verbal and somatic components of any spell they cast while using the staff as a focus.

Channel the Abyss:
When the wielder casts a spell that deals damage, they can choose to add an additional 4d8 necrotic damage to the spell. This ability can be used a number of times equal to the wielder’s proficiency bonus, with all uses refreshing after a long rest.
Void Shield:
As a reaction, the wielder can summon a shield of void energy to protect themselves. The shield grants the wielder resistance to all damage until the start of their next turn. This ability can be used three times per long rest.
Summon Shadow Entities:
The Voidstaff can call forth creatures from the Abyss. As an action, the wielder can summon either:
  • 1 Shadow Demon or
  • 2 Shadows.
These creatures remain for 1 hour and obey the wielder’s commands. This feature recharges at dawn.
Spell Overload:
The Voidstaff enables the wielder to push past conventional magical limits, allowing them to cast a spell of 10th level or higher. When doing so, the spell’s effects are magnified, and its area of effect, range, or duration is doubled (chosen by the DM). However, the wielder must make a DC 24 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, they take 10d10 necrotic damage and suffer 1 level of exhaustion. This ability can be used once per month.

Enhanced Properties (Post-Attunement)

Once the wielder completes the attunement ritual, they unlock the true potential of the Voidstaff.
Master of the Abyss:
The wielder’s connection to the void is absolute. While attuned, they gain:
  • Immunity to being frightened.
  • Advantage on saving throws against being charmed.
  • Darkvision extended to 120 feet, and the ability to see through magical darkness.

Unravel Reality:
The wielder gains access to the following spells, which they can cast once per long rest without expending a spell slot:
Disintegrate Finger of Death Plane Shift Power Word Kill

Abyssal Vision:
The wielder can see into the Ethereal Plane and the Abyssal Void at will. As an action, they can focus their gaze, allowing them to see hidden or ethereal creatures for 10 minutes.

Special Power - Abyssal Cataclysm

Once per month, the wielder can invoke the full might of the Abyssal Cataclysm, channeling raw void energy to warp reality itself.
  • Effect: As an action, the wielder chooses a point within 300 feet. A 60-foot-radius sphere of pure shadow energy erupts from that point, dealing catastrophic damage to all within.
  • Saving Throw: All creatures in the area must make a DC 24 Constitution saving throw.
  • On a Failed Save: Creatures take 15d10 necrotic damage and are stunned until the end of their next turn.
  • On a Successful Save: Creatures take half damage and are not stunned.
  • Aftermath: The terrain in the area is permanently warped by shadow energy, becoming difficult terrain.
  • Recoil: After using this power, the wielder must make a DC 24 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, they take 8d10 psychic damage and fall unconscious for 1d4 hours.

Curses

Dark Energy Backlash:
Each time the wielder uses one of the Voidstaff’s abilities (e.g., Channel the Abyss or Summon Shadow Entities), they must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the staff releases a pulse of void energy, causing the wielder to take 6d6 necrotic damage and suffer disadvantage on their next spell attack roll.
Whispers of the Abyss:
The Voidstaff constantly whispers dark secrets and temptations into the wielder's mind. Each dawn, the wielder must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, they suffer from paranoia and hallucinations for the next 24 hours, imposing disadvantage on Wisdom and Charisma checks. If the wielder fails three consecutive saves, they become obsessed with the staff, refusing to part with it under any circumstance.
Corruption of the Void:
Each time the wielder casts a 10th-level or higher spell using the Voidstaff, they must make a DC 20 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the void siphons away a piece of the wielder’s soul, causing their alignment to shift one step toward evil. Only a greater restoration or wish spell can restore their alignment.

The Voidstaff is a legendary artifact said to have been forged by Axmos — Manapō, the Veilbinder, as a conduit between the mortal world and the abyssal currents of raw arcane power beyond the Veil. Carved from an unknown blackened material that seems to drink in light, the staff hums with dark mana and whispers fragments of forgotten spells to those who wield it. In the hands of a powerful sorcerer, the Voidstaff amplifies spellcasting to terrifying levels, allowing its bearer to channel destructive void energy, summon shadow entities, and even bend the limits of magic itself. Yet the staff is far from benign—its abyssal power slowly erodes the mind and soul of its wielder, tempting them toward darker magic and binding them ever closer to Axmos’s influence.
