Baro Settlement in The Sea of Starlight | World Anvil

Baro

The city of Baro is situated on the island by the same name in front of the western coast of West Azuno. It is part of the region of Ankoya but has remain rather secluded from the rest of the continent due to its separation from the main land. It is situated on the side of an active volcano, which provides a natural protection to certain forms of wildlife and dangerous creatures, but also comes with its own dangers.

Volcanic Struggle

This city relies on its wizards, whose mastery of ice magic makes the city a habitable place. The city was originally founded by an Entarian elf hundreds of years ago, and wizards in Baro still undergo teachings of Entari origin focused on mastering ice magic. This training starts at a young age and combines theoretical knowledge of elemental magic with practical applications. The wizards are also taught survival skills specific to volcanic landscapes. This includes study of volcanic activity and how to navigate that type of terrain, but also understanding the nature of fire and Lava Elementals which roam freely around the city and on the volcano. When fully trained, the wizards patrol the city and its surroundings to monitor for signs of volcanic activity or other signs of danger. They will neutralize any threats but wll also allow lava or volcanic energy to be released safely in other places.

Cooling Down

Various channels and ditches are used to divert lava flows around the city, which provides a blazing defensive barrier and casts the city in an orange glow at night. Scattered throughout Baro are also a great number of wells that are enchanted to cool the water preserved inside them to an ice cold temperature. These ice wells cool down the ground around them and release chilled air into the surrounding areas. The wizards regularly repair the enchantments within the wells and add water or ice to them created through spells, to balance the temperature.
