Ebony Birch
The Ebony Birch is a rare tree species known for its black bark, whisper-thin leaves, and natural connection to shadow magic. It grows only in areas where the Veil between planes is thin, particularly near shadow crossings, rifts, or ancient ruins touched by the Plane of Shadow. The tree’s presence is often seen as an omen, signaling both danger and opportunity for those who understand its true nature.
Shadowtouched
Unlike ordinary birches, the Ebony Birch does not thrive in sunlight. It prefers low light, deep shade, or areas steeped in negative energy. The birch’s bark is dark, almost black, and flakes off in thin, curling layers that seem to resist natural decay. Its leaves shimmer with an oily, silver sheen under moonlight, and its roots often grow toward nearby sources of Nebulantium. The tree absorbs this energy slowly over decades, infusing its heartwood with subtle but powerful magical properties.Delicate and Dark
The Ebony Birch is highly prized by arcanists, alchemists, and master enchanters. Its wood can be harvested to produce Shadowbark, a powerful crafting material used in the creation of resilient magical items. However, not all Ebony Birch trees produce viable Shadowbark. Only those grown in environments with a balanced concentration of negative Nebulantium (enough to charge the tree without overwhelming it) yield the highest quality timber. Because of this delicate requirement, Ebony Birches cannot be reliably cultivated through ordinary means. Attempts to transplant them into controlled environments have largely failed, as the trees seem to require a specific, naturally occurring balance of shadow energy to truly thrive.Bringer of Balance
Naturally occurring ebony birch groves are rare and often protected by creatures of shadow or fey with ties to darkness, and have become sacred places for shadow-practicing druids or secretive practicioners of Divination and Abjuration. Despite their eerie appearance, Ebony Birches are not inherently evil. Their alignment with the Plane of Shadow makes them an element of balance by absorbing excess negative energy from their environment and stabilizing potentially volatile magic. Some scholars even believe the trees serve as natural anchors, helping to contain or suppress dangerous rifts to other planes.
