The Lurker in the Dark

Before the Kingdom of Ascensia, the continent of Karia, Idoria, the Material Plane, or even space as it would later be known, the universe sat barren. Devoid of matter, light, or energy. Nothing lived. Nothing died. Memories weren't created or forgotten, and mistakes had yet to be made or prevented. It is not known when it all changed, exactly, but without warning, a small group of beings stepped into this place devoid of all existence. Their party numbered fewer than ten, but together they turned the infinite emptiness into infinite potential.

As these travelers tinkered with the empty space, they turned their wills into matter, into light, into energy. They worked together tirelessly to bring forth the very first star, its ignition shining almost as brilliantly as the travelers' own glory, the very first planets, their barren rocky surfaces scorching from the divine light of their creators, and eventually the very first galaxy, whose magnificence loomed over the previous creations with pride. It took them an unimaginable amount of time to accomplish these feats of sheer willpower: long enough for them to realize they needed further assistance if they were to create an entire universe together. From their inconceivable desires, the Arcanists were created. They were the very first beings to be crafted in the universe, the first to think in ways that the original interlopers did not, and the first god-like entities created in order to better manage the travelers' new space. These beings had all the same power that their creators did: they could create matter from willpower, move celestial objects on a whim, and infuse mind-bending amounts of power into things to get certain reactions to take place. With their creation, however, something stirred in the furthest reaches of the endless void of space that not even the travelers had seen.

Many aeons passed as the Arcanists continued to assist in the creation of countless celestial objects of various sizes. In an otherwise-unoccupied corner of  space, one particular Arcanist began forging the heart of a new star; its creation would mark a milestone for the travelers, whose other creations still occupied the same general area of space, as the farthest object from the heart of the universe. Once the Arcanist had breathed new life into the star- its blazing glory spewing endless light into the void of space around it- they noticed something shift, twist, and churn in the dark. Alarmed by this, the Arcanist attempted to alert its creators about the mysterious stirring in the dark; but they found themselves stunned and unable to move. The stirring in the shadows appeared to cease before a force of unknown origin enveloped the lone Arcanist, erasing it from existence entirely; its memory seemingly vanishing from their creators' minds simultaneously.

The lone Arcanist's disappearance wasn't noticed until one of the travelers, "Gra'Nu'Mae"- "The One True Goddess of Creation", also known to her fellowship as "Mae"- decided to investigate a flickering star at the edge of creation; something about how its light wavered didn't sit right with her. After making the trek out to the lonely star, or what was left of it, she noticed an alien object that rent and gnawed on the star's mass and light with a hunger that she had never seen before. The star's matter was stretched impossibly thin, disassembled entirely, and added to the singularity's ever-consuming form. Upon further investigation, Mae discovered that no matter what she created, this mysterious object would consume it wholly, sucking it into the pitch-black point, quickly at first, and then once something hit a certain threshold, it seemed to freeze in place before slowly fading away; no matter, light, nor energy remained... Furious by this experience, Mae continued tirelessly to close, destroy, and even sate the savage annihilator; but it was all for naught, as the vile singularity continued to hunger. Mae, up to this point, had faced destruction before, her husband, "Gra'Nu'Giirt"- "The One True God of Destruction", known to his fellowship as "Giirt"- had dismantled and broken things before; but with that she would just gather all the pieces and make something new... This, on the other hand, was the first time any of her creations had truly been annihilated from existence and she didn't know how to cope with it.

With her heart wracked with frustration and sorrow, she immediately summoned her husband to the heretical object. After expressing her hatred and loathing towards the eternally-hungry hole in reality, her husband took her hands, and with their wills combined, they tore the singularity apart, leaving nothing but a twisted memory in its place. Mae's and Giirt's celebration of their victory over this anomaly was short lived as they felt the unholy presence of something that was most certainly not supposed to exist nearby. Thinking quickly, Mae creates a light whose brightness shone brighter than even her own glory, unmasking ever corner of the universe all at once and revealing something truly horrifying; a being who inhabited all of the darkness that surrounded them and their humble universe. A being so incomprehensibly large that it squirmed and pushed against the far edges of the void- like a snake that was much too large for its container- as it writhed in Mae's brilliant light. The creators were as grains of sand trying to comprehend the fullness of the night sky above them; their size, no matter how large they manifested themselves, would never be enough to even begin to reasonably compare to this entity lurking all around them; no matter how many of the creators aligned their wills, it would never even come close to that of this being in the dark.

The being cursed the travelers with the knowledge of its name, its words alone were powerful enough to make the creators and their Arcanists fear for their continued existence. Gathering together, the creators attempted to create a barrier around their infant universe; a barrier that would grow endlessly as the universe did and that would keep the wretched entity out... Even with their power combined, they would never be able to kill or cast-out this entity; but that barrier, their protective shell against what loomed in the darkness, would suffice... For a time.
