Paper Sailor

The Paper Sailor glides gracefully on the seas around West Azuno, its stark white sails, like pages of paper, billowing in the wind. This vessel is a typical tradeship, mainly transporting paper and paper goods across the ocean, and is therefore vital for scholars of the Empire of the Jade Eye. Apart from deliviering this precious cargo to various settlements, the Paper Sailor sometimes makes small detours for passengers looking to explore locations along the routes of the ship. After slowly becoming more trusted and renowned within the empire, the Paper Sailor has become a frequently chartered ship for the Imperial Academies.

Appearance

The Paper Sailor is a medium-sized trade vessel with a simple utilitarian, but well-maintained design. Its purple flag is emblazoned with the symbol of a single white diamond. The dark hull is polished and reinforced to endure unpredictable waters, with decorative carvings of flowing scrolls along the the bow. Its figurehead depicts a graceful hand holding a quill, when viewed from afar it appears as if it is writing a message on the line of the horizon itself.

Main Deck

The main deck is spacious and orderly, designed for efficiency. It features a central cargo hatch for loading and unloading goods, surrounded by ropes and pulleys to secure delicate shipments of paper. A modest but well-constructed helm sits near the stern, and seating areas for passengers have been added, and even features two small collapsible desks for scribes and scholars to work while in transit (provided the weather and waves allows such work).

Middle Deck

Below the main deck lies the middle deck, which serves as passenger quarters and storage for fragile goods. The cabins are small but tidy, offering basic accommodations with enough space for up to 12 passengers. The crew has their own quarters tucked toward the stern. A communal dining area doubles as a study space for scholars.

Lower Deck

The lowest level houses the bulk of the cargo. This deck is carefully partitioned to protect the paper goods from moisture, with additional space for other supplies and expedition equipment. A small section of the deck contains barrels of fresh water and food stores for long journeys.

Crew

The Crew of the Paper Sailor consists of 15 sailors, each well-trained and disciplined in their duties. The crew has years of experience sailing Imperial trade routes, offering a seamless journey for passengers and efficient delivery of goods. Their adaptability to both calm seas and unexpected storms has earned them a dependable reputation. Each crew member has plenty of knowledge of dangerous waters and has basic combat training to defend against pirates or other threats. They excel in organizing and safeguarding sensitive and cargo prone to water damage like the valuable paper goods and scholarly materials the ship transports.

History

The Paper Sailor originates from Athorea, and was first chartered by the Imperial Academies nearly two decades ago to facilitate the transport of valuable materials, including reams of parchment and vellum. Over the years, it has expanded its services to sometimes carry scholars and expedition teams to locations between harbors. The ship’s name has become synonymous with precision and reliability, and its reputation as a boon for academics has spread throughout the Ankoyan Sea. Despite its peaceful purpose, the ship has endured its share of challenges, including surviving a pirate attack and weathering several severe storms but these trials have only added to its legacy as a dependable vessel.
