Trueply Paper Material in The Sea of Starlight | World Anvil

Trueply Paper

Trueply paper is a type of paper that is commonly used to create scrolls that are used to enscribe Spells on and sheets of paper for spellbooks, as well as for the creation of Paper Charms and Origamiracle Paper. It is created through unique processes that result in paper that is known for its versatility and potency in magical applications. Trueply paper might look like any other paper to the uninformed, but upon closer inspection arcane practicioners can recognize the quality of the paper and Divination magic reveals that it is brimming with arcane energies and potential.

Producing the Paper

Trueply paper can be made from any type of wood or lumber but the craftsperson needs to know how to prepare it properly to be able to use it. Regardless of the chosen material, the bark or wood is first soaked in water to soften it. Next, it is ground down into a fine pulp using a series of grinding stones. The pulp is then mixed with other ingredients, such as plant fibers or natural dyes, to give the paper its desired properties and color. During this step, it is not uncommon to blend other ingredients into the pulp to layer magic into the paper, most commonly an alchemical compound is added to the pulp, so that it soaks up more magic through Alchemical Transference.   Once the pulp is prepared, it is spread out onto a large, flat surface. The microscopic fibers within the pulp are then magically alligned and kind of woven together. This is sometimes done by the surface the pulp is put on, which can be enchanted through Runic Inscription or Crystallomancy. Some papermakers do this by hand by using their own magical capabilities or with the use wands or staves. The pulp is then allowed to dry. As it dries, it forms a thin, flexible sheet of paper. In the next step the sheet is folded or multiple sheets are layered and pressed together, usually the sheet is rehydrated to make it more pliable and make sure that the sheets blend and stick together. As a final step, the sheet is be pressed together to form a proper single sheet of paper. Depending on the thickness and properties of the sheet, a specialized press may be used for this, but sometimes it is simply put between heavy weights.

Scribe's Prized Paper

One of the most notable properties of trueply paper is its ability to absorb and store magical energy through writing and Projected Intention. This allows it to be used as a medium for spells and rituals as well as Enchanting in general. The amount of magical energy that trueply paper can absorb and store can vary depending on its thickness and the specific (magical) ingredients used in its creation. Trueply paper is usually also more resistant to tearing, fading, and water damage, making it an excellent choice for long-term storage of magical texts and documents. Some types of trueply paper are also more resistant to magical corruption and degradation, ensuring that the writing cannot be changed or the spells written on it remain stable and usable. Other types of trueply paper may glow in the dark, hide what is written to anyone other than the writer, or cannot be burned by fire.   In addition to its practical applications, trueply paper is also prized for its aesthetics. It is often imbued with special dyes and patterns that give it a unique and striking appearance. These dyes and patterns are usually a secret of the craftsperson, and can vary widely in color and design depending on the location, culture and preferences of the craftsperson.
