Volcanic Slow Boiling

Volcanic Slow Boiling is a unique cooking method practiced in the volcanic regions of Azuno. It uses the power of the planet's fiery core and involves utilizing the natural geothermal energy found near active volcanoes. It is a unique method of cooking that the Azun people have developed in coexistence with their natural surroundings to transform simple food into extraordinary meals and feasts. The sight of a bubbling and steaming pot, nestled amidst the rugged volcanic landscape is only second to the aroma's that usually come from these vessels.

Volcanic Vessels

A specialized cooking vessel is used in volcanic slow boiling. Usually, this vessel is a large metal pot or cauldron with a double wall. The vessel is first carefully placed in a hole in the hot rocks and earth close to a volcanic vent or magma stream. The space between the double walls of the vessel is filled with water or the liquid from the shoots of Whiteleaf Bamboo. The liquid turns into steam during the first stage of cooking, which can escape through small holes on the outside of the rim. This allows the dish to heat up slowly at the beginning of the process as the steam evaporates out of the pot before the contents of the pot heat up. This steam mixes with the volcanic minerals of the ground and rocks around it and infuse the dish with a subtle but very distinct flavor. The intense heat generated by the volcanic activity then permeates the vessel and cooks the ingredients inside. The ingredients inside the vessel then simmer gently for multiple hours.

Wonderful Flavors

This slow and constant boiling process allows for the gradual and thorough cooking of the ingredients. If placed at a proper distance from the source of the heat, the process is akin to a very low simmer. The consistent, low heat ensures that the ingredients develop their flavors but also retain their natural textures and the steam adds a unique earthy flavor to the dish. Volcanic Slow Boiling is often employed for preparing soups such as Whiteleaf Soup, but also for stewing tough meats and fully developing the flavors of aromatic herbs and spices native to the jungles of Azuno. The extended cooking time allows the ingredients to meld together harmoniously, resulting in rich, flavorful dishes that are deeply satisfying.

Experimental Alchemy

Some practitioners of Alchemy have tried volcanic slow boling to create alchemical compounds. There are even tales of an alchemist on Tuantiro who has worked together with a friendly Lava Elemental to slowly brew their magical potions using this method.

I love the idea of a culture that develops cool stuff while trying to coexist non-destructively with their environment. And now I want slow-boiled volcanic something or other. Yum!
