2022 Annual Review

The Year of Twin Peaks

General Summary

Hello and welcome, to the Sea of Starlight review of 2022. In this year's review I'll be talking a bit about what has happened last year and what I've achieved. This article will also serve as my WorldAnvil New Year's Resolution article.
This year was interesting, I'm very happy with what I've achieved but it was not easy. I'm a part-time teacher at my local university, and that job was extremely taxing this year. A lot of extra work and stress which definitely made the work I did for Bonus Action and the Sea of Starlight harder. Regardless, there has been some progress in the last part of 2022. I managed to schedule and timebox more efficiently and have had a solid and steady output for patrons. Still, there were two massive peaks in output, of course the two major challenges of WorldAnvil, Summer Camp in july and WorldEmber in december.

Numbers

Lets start off with the statistics here's a quick rundown of what I've written, illustrated and made during 2023. These numbers are an approximation, as it is getting harder and harder to keep track of everything...

Challenges. Compared to 2021, I took it a bit easier on all the WorldAnvil challenges. I only participated in two challgnes, summercamp and worldember. Summer Camp 2022 was a pretty fun challenge. It starts right around when summer break starts for my university job, so that's perfect. I managed to tie all of the different prompts together in the floating city of Tiomera (Coincidentally also my only map this year). It's definitely one of my favorite pieces of worldbuilding this year and I hope to do more stuff like that in the future. WorldEmber 2022 is when things really went crazy, of the 157k words I've written on WorldAnvil this year, 113k was during WorldEmber. WorldEmber saw the birth of 100 Spellybeans, 89 Paper Charms and many methods of Enchanting as well as Draconic Smithing and Watersmithing. Will I do WorldEmber again next year? Probably. Will I do it again with 500 articles and 100K+ words? Unlikely, but don't challenge me.   Pacing.Back in august I decided I should pace my content, before that point I was always stressing whether or not I was producing enough for my patrons. Now, I'm set on 12 items a month, with some simple/consumable items like potions on top of that. Over time this may change again, but for now it is a really nice steady flow of output which I can manage on a monthly basis. (Needless to say this principle went fully out the window for WorldEmber...). A small note is that I haven't been keeping up with posting on my social channels with all my content. Definitely need to work on that for 2023 and keep that consistent as well.   Business Action. In november I've started talking with a marketing company who are going to help me reach my audience and grow my business. We've scheduled our first real session in january, and i'm super excited (and nervous) to see where it goes. Despite the developments in the TTRPG space and changing economical and artistic circumstances, I'm willing to take the risk and see what I can make of my business. I've already started to change my patreon tiers and rewards, which will be rolling out in the next few weeks with updated and new products (which, I'll still have to make some time for and create... it's a lot of PDFs!). Meanwhile, I'll keep up my regular content and try to do some online art courses to improve the quality of my work further. The latter has really not happened a lot in 2022, so it's high time!   Athletics Check. Non business related but still important to me personally, I've started swimming three times a week. I plan on participating in the Amsterdam City Swim, an event that raises funds for ALS research. My father passed away from this disease, and I've always wanted to do something. Will be announcing further details on socials and discord, so if you're interested in sponsoring me, keep your eyes open!   Goals for 2023
In short, here are a bunch of my goals in no particular order.
  • Do more art/writing/storytelling courses.
  • Post content more consistently on socials (including sharing more WA articles)
  • Create 12 items a month plus 4 consumables / small items.
  • Write more worldbuilding content outside of challenges.
  • Participate in Summer Camp 2023 and WorldEmber 2023
  • Explore more business options and create more products
  • Play more games in my world.
  • Eat healthy and exercise more.
  • Go to the US to visit friends and attend a con(?)
  • Get a bit back into the WorldAnvil community and discord
  • Notes

As a closing note, I'd like to give a special thanks to my patrons and followers, without you, I wouldn't be able to create this world and all the content for it. Your support is what makes this possible and I cannot thank you enough for that!
Shout-out also to the people over on the WorldAnvil discord who (specifically during Summer Camp and WorldEmber) inspired me and kept me going. Those of you who've read my crazy ramblings here (and LIKED IT), thanks so much!
