Roxpar Dam

The grand dam on the Roxpar river is a grand structure within the Empire of the Jade Eye. It is a marvel of engineering and industrial progress, but at the same time an environmental disaster.   The immense height of the dam dominates the landscape. The massive stone wall is thick enough to situate housing and a road on top of it. Within the wall, the dam harnesses the river's power to power an array of mills. These mills feature massive grinding stones that grind wood fiber into a pulp which is used to make paper. The creation of this paper is done by craftspeople in the workshops on top of the dam. The paper created here is then shipped to various cities and towns across the empire. Since its construction, the dam has provided the empire with a greater and more consistent supply of paper than it had ever had before which has aided greatly in the empire's governance, communication and education.   However, the dam has also significantly altered the river's ecosystem. The reduction in water flow beyond the dam has led to drier riverbanks which lead to a decrease in aquatic wildlife. The dry riverbanks in combination with the cutting of trees for paper has also caused dangerous mudslides in the area during heavy rainfall. These environmental changes have had a big impact, particularly on the communities that once depended on the river. Displacement and adaptation to this new reality have marked the lives of those living in the dam's shadow so despite its contributions to the empire's prosperity, the dam's ecological and social consequences are still of concern for the Imperial Academies and especially the Academy of Nature and Academy of Order.
