Vjørsgard

Vjørsgard, is a vast and ancient continent. It's a land where nature’s raw power and ancient magics have shaped not only the terrain but also the destiny of its inhabitants. A lot of the continent is shrouded in mystery, the few settlements and people that live there have little to no contact with the outside world, and many civilizations have faded from existence over the ages due all sorts of reasons ranging from natural, divine and arcane disasters.

Mountains of Old

Dominating much of Vjørsgard’s northern regions are towering mountain ranges, with peaks that pierce the clouds. The peaks of these ranges soar to dizzying heights, often shrouded in clouds and perpetual snow. The highest summits are covered in ice and snow year-round, presenting a gleaming white spectacle against the blue sky. The ruggedness of the mountain ranges makes them a challenging terrain for travel and habitation. The weather can be unpredictable and harsh, with sudden snowstorms, avalanches, and strong winds being common. Despite this, the mountains are a source of resources like minerals, rare herbs, and medicinal plants.   These peaks, visible from great distances, have been the subject of many myths and tales of legend. The mountains of Vjørsgard are supposedly riddled with caves, tunnels, and ancient ruins. Hidden places and remnants of lost civilizations and forgotten peoples who once called the mountains home. According to some, a few of these places are the resting places of ancient dragons or the hidden homes of mountain spirits.

Frosted Fjords

Dominating the horizon in certain parts of Vjørsgard are colossal glaciers. These massive rivers of ice, some ancient and slow-moving, carve through the landscape, shaping the terrain over millennia. The glaciers are awe-inspiring in their beauty, with hues of blue and white that shimmer under the sunlight. They hold within them a history of the continent, with layers of ice that tell tales of ages past.   The coastline of Vjørsgard is a spectacular tapestry of deep and narrow inlets, carved by the relentless force of ancient glaciers. These fjords have served as natural fortresses for a number of isolated communities. Historically, the fjords have been of great strategic importance. Their natural defenses made them ideal for protection against invaders. Many fjords have remnants of old fortifications, watchtowers, and hidden docks.   Life in the fjords comes with its challenges. The rugged terrain, limited arable land, and harsh weather conditions require resilience and adaptability. However, the fjords also offer opportunities for fishing, small-scale farming, and in recent times have become a destination for adventurers and explorers drawn by the secrets that Life in the fjords comes with its challenges. Lush Forests

The forests of Vjørsgard are a haven for biodiversity. The coniferous woods, with their towering pines, spruces, and firs, create a perpetual green landscape, even in the harsh winters. The deciduous groves, on the other hand, offer a riot of colors in the autumn, with their maples, oaks, and birches. These woods are home to a myriad of creatures, from the common squirrels and deer to the more elusive and perhaps mythical beings rumored to dwell within the deeper parts of the forest including spirits of the woods, fae beings, and entities whose existence is intertwined with the arcane energy that pervades the land. Ancient trees are rumored to be sentient and hold the secrets from times long past.

Misty Marshes

The marshlands in Vjørsgard's lowlands are cloaked in fog and mystery, a place where dense mists often obscure visibility and where ancient magic is said to reign. These watery areas are home to unique flora and fauna, from rare plants to a variety of birds and amphibians. Some believe the marshes provide access to other worlds, where the boundary between reality and the supernatural is thin. Despite the dangers, these marshes can offer vast wealth, not only in natural resources but also in other treasures that the marshes have swallowed over the centuries.

Barren Tundras

The tundra regions of Vjørsgard, characterized by their treeless, frozen landscapes, stretch under wide, open skies. During the brief summers, these plains transform with a burst of hardy vegetation - mosses, lichens, and small shrubs, providing a stark contrast to the otherwise barren, ice-encrusted ground. The tundra is home to a resilient set of wildlife adapted to the harsh conditions, from herds of reindeer to elusive arctic foxes and hares. It's a land of survival, where every creature and plant has adapted uniquely to the extreme cold and the scarcity of resources. In some parts of the tundra, the landscape is sculpted by the primal forces of volcanoes and geothermal energy. Here, the ground breathes steam, and the earth occasionally rumbles, a reminder of the continent’s fiery heart.

Lost Civilizations

Throughout its long and storied past, Vjørsgard has seen the emergence and disappearance of numerous civilizations. Some flourished by harnessing the land's natural resources or through advancements in magic and technology. Others were conceived in the wake of divine revelations or mystical events. However, the same forces that nurtured these civilizations often led to their undoing. Natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions; cataclysmic magical wars that tore the fabric of reality; and the whims of capricious deities all played roles in their eventual downfall. For the people of Vjørsgard, the ruins of these civilizations are a constant reminder of the past, but for explorers, they represent the future and the possibility of uncovering lost wealth, knowledge, artifacts and power.
