Elemental Planes

The elemental planes are a collection of the four planes of existense that harbor the energy and source of the four elements. Each elemental plane is inhabited by beings and creatures that embody the associated element as well as many others that have made it their home despite the sometimes dangerous and inhospitable conditions on these planes of existence.

The Elements

Water. The Plane of Water is a realm of existence that is composed almost entirely of water. The plane is similar to an endless dark ocean, with powerful currents and unpredictable tidal movements. However, there are also places that are more like a quiet pond or serene lake.   Earth. The Plane of Earth is a vast and unforgiving realm. In effect this plane is an endless system of caves and caverns. There are countless tiny tunnels but also massive chambers with towering mountains and deep chasms.   Fire. The elemental Plane of Fire is a realm of pure flame and heat. Compared to the plane of fire, the deserts of the material plane are a comfortable place.   Air. The Plane of Air of air is a realm of pure wind and sky. It is a place of constant motion and change, with powerful winds and swirling air currents creating a landscape of clouds in an endless sky.

Shape of the Planes

Where the planes are closest to the material plane (in a conceptual if not a literal geographical sense), the four Elemental Planes are the most hospitable, but further away from the material plane, the elemental planes clash in an endless chaos of energies and colliding elements. Because of the unknown dimensions and wild energies, it is unknown what shape the elemental planes have exactly. However, some scholars have theorized that the Elemental planes form a sort of pyramid around the inner planes of existence.   This pyramid is often depicted with the earth plane at the bottom of the pyramid, representing the solid, stable foundation upon which everything else rests. The fire plane is on the left side of the pyramid, representing the first spark and flame of life symbolizing it as a force that can shape the world. The water plane is on the right side of the pyramid, representing the force to cleanse, balance and stabilize the world. The air plane is on the backside of the pyramid, representing the invisible, intangible and ever-changing nature of the element and it's existence and co-existence with the other elements.
