Kitekeeper Profession in The Sea of Starlight | World Anvil

Kitekeeper

Kitekeepers emerged when the Kite Cypher evolved into a more widespread method of communication. In the early days, when Kite Cypher demanded a deep understanding of the winds and the delicate craftsmanship of kites, the Kitekeepers held an esteemed position, revered for their expertise. Though the occupation of Kitekeeper may have faded into history, their work paved the way for the Kite Cypher to bloom and connect the islands of the Crimson Chain Isles.

Ascent of the Keepers

The occupation came into being when the kite cypher became a common practice across the Crimson Chain Isles. Kitekeepers were first and foremost responsible for flying the kites. They required a fair bit of education and training to be able to inspect weather conditions and patterns to effectively have the winds lift the kites. They were also taught to wield specialized spools with carefully wound strings through which they were able to control the kites' ascent and descent with precise movements, leading them to a place in the sky where they would stay aloft and were clearly visible.

Descent of the Keepers

When kites enchanted with levitation enchantments were developed by Jihlan Morvovo, the role of the Kitekeeper underwent a sudden transformation. The once vital occupation slowly became less essential as the enchanted kites took to the skies far more easily. The enchantments stitched into the kites rendered the traditional duties of kitekeepers redundant, and the positions in the kitespires were taken over by rangers, scouts and guards. These new guardians required only minimal training in the intricacies of the Kite Cypher system, making the role of the Kitekeeper obsolete. Most kitekeepers were also adept artisans in the art of kite-making. Their expertise extended to designing various kite shapes and sizes, each suited to specific messaging needs and weather conditions. So many kitekeepers made kite-making their full time occupation after this shift in their occupation. Some even studied and learned the art of spell stitching to create the enchantments on the kites.
