Riftmender Profession in The Sea of Starlight | World Anvil

Riftmender

Riftmenders are typically arcane practitioners of somesort that are able to close rifts between the planes of existence. They are crucial for closing portals that connect to a dangerous plane of existence, most importantly to prevent and mend dimensional fractures. They possess a deep understanding of the arcane forces between the various planes of existence. Not every riftmender can close every portal or rift and on top of that, some small portals and rifts can be closed relatively easy, whilst others may take days, months or even years to fully mend.

Many Methods.

The methods employed by Riftmenders vary extremely, it is largely dependent on the nature of the rift but also on their personal expertise. Some may use spells of their own design, whilst others use ancient rituals passed down through generations to close the tear in reality. Over time, riftmenders have created their own specialized tools to aid them in their tasks. Some make use of Alchemy by creating alchemical compounds that can be vaporized. Others, such as Lena Zhovao have created intricate magitech devices that allows them to better analyze the rift or contain it temporarily using an apparatus that generates an anti-magic field while a more permanent solution is developed.

Worldwalkers

Riftmenders are commonly traveling across the world and sometimes across the planes of existence to apply their craft or offer their services. They are a welcome sight to commoners and nobles, because if left unattended, a rift or portal can lead to disastrous consequences, allowing dangerous creatures and chaotic energies from other dimensions to spill into the material plane. Because of these potential dangers, the work of a Riftmender is not without risks. Experienced Riftmenders have all developed or employed some form of protection for themselves to safely do their work. Throughout history, there have also been Riftmenders who have been used as covert operatives in times of war. Closing or disrupting teleportation circles and portals between two forces or nations can prevent infiltration by the enemy through these portals, or it can halt the exchange of goods, people and information between two allied forces.
